About Us:
Kensington and Chelsea Council and Westminster City Council recognise that the views and experiences of children and young people with special educational needs and / or disabilities (SEND) are central to the work we are doing to shape our local offer of services for them and their families.
We are therefore excited to offer this opportunity to develop and promote sustainable participation structures for children and young people with SEND in both boroughs.
The Role:
Based within our SEND Local Offer and SEN Outreach Service, the role will ensure that children and young people with SEND have their voices heard at a strategic and operational level in the planning, delivery and evaluation of services and in the development of policies and procedures, enabling them to live safely and confidently in their communities.
You will develop and facilitate participation and consultation mechanisms to promote disabled children and young people’s participation and engagement with existing participation structures (e.g. Youth Councils, Youth Advisory Groups, Looked After Children Councils, School Councils etc…) to ensure SEND representation at the forums and processes for the Local Authority to gather views from a range of sources as and when required.
You will also be passionate about promoting the rights of children and young people with SEND, and the determination to break down barriers to participation, ensuring that engagement with children and young people with SEND is adopted as a ‘business as usual’ activity across children’s services and other areas of council business.
Please refer to the Job Description for more information.
About You:
You will have relevant and direct experience of working with children and young people from diverse backgrounds, including those with special educational needs and / or disabilities, and implementing programmes that aid their participation, ensuring that their views and experiences are used to inform strategic and operational change.
You will have an understanding of the issues affecting children and young people with SEND and will be able to link these to the delivery of our Local SEND Strategies and national SEND legislation. You will also be skilled in monitoring and evaluating your work, producing reports to summarise activity undertaken and clearly articulate the outcomes that have been achieved.
