The opportunity

The Parliamentary Digital Service (PDS) works with the House of Commons, the House of Lords, and Parliament staff on their IT and digital needs.

At the Parliamentary Digital Service, we're transforming the way Parliament does digital. We're responsible for the digital output of all parliamentary services. We think it's important that everyone can access and understand what's going on in Parliament. Our goal is to bring together the public, Parliament Members, and Parliamentary staff to inform, engage, support, and communicate through one, unified digital core - PDS.
Development operations support the development and operation of software through tools, environments, and practices.

You will be responsible for underpinning good development processes including managing tools and testing environments, central code control, maintaining development standards and writing software that automates systems. As a Senior DevOps Engineer you will be delivering and integrating software to form a complete DevOps toolchain. You are responsible for planning and designing large groups of stories.

What you need

We are currently looking for candidates who have:

  • driving forward the quality and delivery of all products and services built, ensuring automated pipelines are developed, maintained and supported to ensure delivery to all environments.
  • developing knowledge and awareness of the technical architecture of products and services built by the team is documented, shared and updated in accordance with the sprint cycle.
  • ensuring the skills of engineers in our team are sufficient for the needs of the products and services being developed, including providing coaching and mentoring to colleagues.
  • provide strong teambuilding and management skills with the ability to motivate, lead and develop a large diverse team ensuring resources are organised appropriately and effectively.
  • act as a deputy for the head of devops and infrastructure as and when required.
  • overseeing adequate transfer of knowledge between development and development operations and an ongoing focus on joined-up, collaborative working with colleagues across technology, cyber security, architecture, data, accreditation, and live services teams in pds.
  • working with colleagues across the organisation to ensure all environments and the systems deployed to them in use are managed and supported in accordance with the needs of the business.
  • creating and managing accreditation processes for products and services being developed as well as participating in the appropriate technical governance processes within the organisation.
  • operating as part of the senior technical community in the product directorate to review and evolve processes, structures and policies as appropriate to ensure maximum effectiveness based on current organisational need.
  • understanding the needs of the internal or external customer and keeps them in mind when taking actions or making decisions whilst being cognisant of the differences between needs and wants, maintaining a strong focus on benefits, outcomes, and value for money in all the work we do.

About the team

The Product Directorate is central to our Parliament-wide programme - Transforming Digital (TD) - that will fundamentally change the way Parliament works. We are working to digitise our democracy by creating, supporting and improving our products and services with the aim of making things easier and better for users. Our work spans a range of back and front-end products and services aimed at meeting the rising customer needs of Members and their staff for better digital services.
