Senior Finance Analyst, Corporate Development

Location: GSK House, Brentford – Tottenham Court Road

‘We’re moving towards a more sustainable future with our new headquarters. With better public transport links and proximity to world-class science and technology institutions, we’re excited for our move to the vicinity of Earnshaw Street, London WC1A (“the New HQ”) by end H1 2024.’

Job Purpose

The Global Corporate Development team, reporting to the VP & Head of Corporate Development, comprises ~10 professional staff based in London/ Philadelphia plus administrative support. The team is part of the wider Global Corporate Development group that reports to the President, Corporate Development.

The Corporate Development team manages a fast-moving portfolio of strategic projects on behalf of the SVP Global Corporate Development and members of the Global Leadership Team (GLT). These strategic projects mostly relate to acquisition or sale of companies or brands by GSK as well as R&D licensing agreements. These transactions range in value from a few £’m to in excess of £1bn. Each project is unique, but all are highly confidential as they have the potential to directly impact the share price of GSK and other companies.

As the Senior Finance Analyst, Corporate Development you will be responsible for…

Supporting Corporate Development projects (eventually with the prospect of leading smaller deals as you gain experience). This is a high-profile role, which will require close interaction with GLT members, external advisers, and other senior management.

It requires strong financial and evaluation skills together with a broad understanding of the company’s business and the industry in which it operates. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, an innovative and “self-starter” approach, an ability to deliver high quality product to tight deadlines, excellent prioritisation skills, managing ambiguity and total flexibility of response to changing business requirements are critical to success in this role. Some transaction or equity markets exposure would be expected at Grade 6, although high-potential candidates without this experience will also be considered at an initial Grade 7.

Key Responsibilities

Accountability:

  • The Senior Finance Analyst will be required to act as a business partner to many and varied groups from all divisions of GSK and will liaise directly with senior representatives from these groups, working as part of a team. Corporate Development projects typically involve the valuation of a target company using a range of public sources, analysis of the financial impact of acquisition on GSK and the preparation of briefing documents for a GLT audience. The projects may require the Senior Finance Analyst to assist in financial due diligence.

  • Support the Directors of Corporate Development in managing their own project workload. Specifically, the Senior Finance Analyst will (often under very tight time constraints) be required to build, develop, and maintain very complex spreadsheet models and to present outputs clearly and in a highly professional format.

  • Other occasional duties may include for example (i) the preparation of valuations relating to impairment testing of goodwill, intangible assets and entity carrying values, (ii) benchmarking against competitors (iii) the preparation and updating of reports on the GSK target universe and competitor products (iv) making recommendations on corporate actions in relation to GSK’s equity investments and (v) maintenance and improvement of the team’s standard business combination and other financial models

Complexity:

The Corporate Development and Strategy teams work routinely with Global Leadership Team members and senior management from all parts of the business. These customers have high expectations and demand high quality output in short time frames. In order to build and maintain credibility the Senior Finance Analyst must demonstrate close attention to detail, the ability to get things right first time and excellent project management skills. In addition, the Senior Finance Analyst must respond flexibly to rapidly changing priorities and timelines and be comfortable with a high degree of organisational ambiguity.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Qualified ACA/ CIMA accountant

  • Developing knowledge of and interest in the dynamics of the pharmaceutical industry and what drives valuations
