Job Title:Senior Parliamentary Assistant

Working for: Martyn Day MP (Linlithgow and East Falkirk)

Salary Band: Circa 36,000 pro rata plus 10% non-contributory pension (36.5 hrs per week)

Location: Constituency Office in Bathgate

Martyn Day MP is looking to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated Senior Parliamentary Assistant for his Constituency Office in Bathgate.

Job details:
The postholder will work from the Bathgate Constituency office, with some occasional travel to London as required. Some evening and weekend work may also be required to attend surgeries or events.

Key responsibilities:

  • Analyse, evaluate and interpret data to ensure Martyn is accurately informed on key issues.
  • Deal with complex queries and complaints on Martyn’s behalf.
  • Diary management.
  • Establish and develop appropriate strategies around research development.
  • Foresight to identify potential issues or problems and proactively act to resolve them.
  • Lead on project work as required.
  • Maintain and utilise knowledge of relevant legislation, with an awareness of any impact on the local constituency.
  • Manage and progress complex casework, taking ownership as required.
  • Prepare and present briefings for Committees, Parliamentary Questions, articles, and press releases.
  • Research and monitor local, regional, and national media coverage online and through social media; and brief Martyn on relevant issues.
  • Research local, regional, or national issues to support Martyn’s work.
  • Respond to routine correspondence and enquiries from constituents, the media, lobbyists, and pressure groups.
  • Ensure Martyn is fully briefed on potential questions and motions to be put to the House.
  • Undertake research on relevant subjects as directed.
  • Produce high quality graphics for social media and website.

Essential Criteria:

  • A good understanding of UK politics; an interest in current affairs; an awareness of the work of an MP; and support the aims and values of the SNP.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; and be able to work well under pressure while managing a busy workload with competing demands.
  • Be able to produce high quality graphics.
  • Proven skills in the use of Microsoft Office.

Desirable criteria:

  • Local knowledge of the Constituency.
  • Own transport.

Face-to-face interviews will be held in the Constituency office at 62 Hopetoun Street, Bathgate EH484PD mid February 2024.

Prior to appointment the successful candidate will be required to apply for security clearance undertaken by the Security and Vetting Office.
