Who We Are
The British Palestinian Committee (BPC) is an organisation bringing together British Palestinian citizens who are active, and often in leading or representative positions, in relevant organisations and across fields such as policy, advocacy, human rights, law, academia, and journalism. Our mission is to advocate for Palestinian rights by ensuring that British Palestinian voices are integral to public discourse and policymaking on Palestine.
The BPC is an independent, donor-funded non-profit. We are not affiliated with any individual political party, religion, or ideology in Palestine or the UK. While we make no claim to represent British Palestinians as a whole, our members represent a broad and diverse range of British-Palestinian experiences and perspectives.
Where you fit
We are looking to hire a Senior Public Affairs Officer, who will play an important role at an exciting and evolving stage of the BPC, as we continue to build the organisation and execute on our strategic plan for 2024-2027.
Reporting to the Director, you will be responsible for supporting our work with policymakers at the local, regional, and national levels. The ideal candidate will have proven experience and deep demonstrated knowledge of the British political landscape as it relates to Palestine. You will possess excellent research, analysis, and communication skills, be politically-minded, proactive, creative, able to work independently, and willing to work flexibly as part of a small team.
This position could be full or part-time depending on circumstances and experience.
Responsibilities
Monitoring British political and public landscape, identifying key entry points, intersections and creative opportunities for engagement on issues of relevance to the Palestinian community
Contributing to developing a parliamentary engagement strategy for the organisation
Reacting swiftly to parliamentary business, providing briefings and recommendations to the team
Carrying out research and analysis on issues of relevance to Palestine and the UK - including history, current policy, domestic and international law, etc.
Developing and maintaining working-level relationships with parliamentary staff, committee clerks, advisors, local government officials, public bodies
Compiling background briefings and talking points for Director and EC/AC members ahead of meetings and other engagements, note-taking, follow up
Drafting policy pieces, letters, factsheets and other materials, in coordination with Policy Advocacy Officer
Qualifications, Experience and Skills
Essential
Extensive parliamentary experience or similar experience working in the British political landscape
Postgraduate degree, ideally in politics, human rights, law - or equivalent experience
Demonstrated interest in current affairs and understanding of British political system
Familiarity with Palestinian cause, history, current events, relevant law
Excellent English written and oral communications skills
Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to build relationships on behalf of the organisation
