About the role

National Grid Electricity Transmission creates value from its assets. This role will manage and assure National Grid of vendors and suppliers quality systems and procedures for our offshore portfolio of assets which include HVDC and transmission related technologies. The Senior Quality Engineer will use national and international standards to benchmark suppliers’ development, design, manufacturing and installation quality systems against agreed standards. The principal value created by this role is the supervision and management of quality systems to ensure National Grid and our partners can be highly confident that the products and services provided will result in agreed asset performance outcomes.


This role will require quality management across the portfolio of work, with a work plan that is £billions of investment. We will also be deploying new technologies and our suppliers constructing new manufacturing facilities and so the business risk will require close client quality system supervision. The Senior Quality Engineer will be familiar with international quality standards covering design, manufacturing and installation of high voltage electrical transmission system assets, such as HVDC and HVAC substation equipment and land and marine cables. You may be working on CIGRE working groups or similar. You will help shape the asset quality systems and procedures necessary to deliver our offshore ASTI plans of today and shape the of our future offshore networks.

Key Accountabilities

  • Lead on supplier quality assurance across the offshore portfolio.
  • Ensure quality procedures and systems are adhered too, and where deviations occur recommend corrective interventions.
  • Assist suppliers in overall quality system management to achieve our stated goals.
  • Create and management a quality management system for the offshore portfolio
  • Identify and drive innovation in quality management techniques.
  • Support National Grid’s relationships with key external stakeholders, partners and suppliers
  • Work with JV partners to establish consistent and effective quality management systems.
  • Provide senior executive advice, reports and briefings.

Knowledge, Experience and Technical Know How


Interpersonal, Supervisory or Management:
  • Lead through ambiguity and change at all levels of seniority across SI and ET
  • Coach and challenge others at all levels of seniority across SI and ET
  • Lead virtual teams of internal or external individuals


Technical or Specialist:
  • Expert knowledge of quality management systems associated with transmission systems.
  • Demonstrable experience of working with procurement and suppliers on quality.
  • Influencing quality standards, both internally and externally
  • Able to think beyond convention; employing quality frameworks and concepts to a range of new and novel applications to derive value and to solve business issues.

A competitive salary, circa £60,000 – dependent on capability.
