Job description

We are looking for an enthusiastic and kind individual who genuinely enjoys the company of young people.  You will also have an active interest in sport and experience in coaching. 

The role has two key elements.  In the mornings, you will work with our teaching staff providing classroom support, mostly with our Geits (Primary 7 age) pupils.  Your role will be to actively assist in the classroom, provide administrative support and help with the organisation of resources and activities.  In the afternoons, you will work alongside our PE and Games staff in providing sports coaching to pupils of all ages. 

Our interns would normally be expected to help in coaching a sports team and so would therefore be part of our Saturday morning Games programme. 

This role is particularly suited to someone who might be interested in a career in teaching and there will be opportunities to provide bespoke experience relating to interest areas of the individual.

The role is term time only and is for the 24/25 academic session, starting 16 August 2024 until 27 June 2025.

Main ResponsibilitiesClassroom Support


Assisting with Geits (P7) supervision during and between lessons
Accompanying Geits during assemblies, games and trips (where needed)
Assisting with playground and lunchtime supervision
Providing additional support at School events such as drama productions and sports days


Support for Learning


Providing classroom assistance for pupils where needed (all years)
Working one-to-one or in small groups to support pupils with their School work
Carrying out literacy sessions with small groups and feeding updates back to the Support for Learning department.
Liaising with the Support for Learning department to raise any issues or concerns.
Assisting with exams and revision planning
Reading or scribing during exams and controlled assessments as required


PE & Games Coaching


Afternoons will be spent supporting the PE and Games programme at both the Junior and Senior Schools. Core School sports are:
Rugby; Hockey; Netball; Cricket; Tennis; Athletics


Rugby and Hockey take place during the Autumn and Spring terms, with Cricket, Tennis and Athletics taking pace during the summer term


You may also be asked to support with swimming, as well as our varied games programme

The ability to form good relationships and connections with the pupils is one of the most important parts of the job. Patience and empathy are key attributes needed in the support for learning aspect of the role.
About the school/organisationThe Edinburgh Academy is a fully co-educational school. The School consists of a Senior School, Junior School and a Nursery Department. The School is a member of HMC. The Edinburgh Academy moved to full co-education across the whole school in 2008. The Junior and Senior Schools are on separate sites, both of which have spacious grounds and sports facilities including extensive playing fields, an all-weather sports area, and a large Sports Hall and Centre.
