Job description

Royal Museums Greenwich (RMG) is a collection of diverse historical sites. The sites are the National Maritime Museum, Cutty Sark, the Royal Observatory, and the Queen’s House. Each of these sites has a unique identity and a common purpose to serve our communities, through sharing our collections and expertise. We are a place to explore the sea, space, art and history, and our strategy ‘Charting Our Course’ puts people at the core of its success.

Working within the Security team and reporting to the Duty Shift Manager, the Senior Security Officer will be responsible for supervising and supporting the security team, acting as a deputy to the Duty Shift Manager as required to ensure a safe and secure environment for all staff, visitors, and site users. The Senior Security Officer will also work to deliver a high level of security provision for the buildings, assets, and interests of RMG. Key responsibilities include monitoring CCTV systems, liaising with gallery staff via the radio network to prevent crime and disorder, responding to emergency situations in accordance with emergency manuals and response plans, monitoring fire and intruder alarm systems, assisting in emergency and evacuation procedures, and assisting in the investigation of any crime related incident or incident where the interests of the Museum are concerned.

The successful candidate will have extensive security experience, good knowledge of security systems and procedures along with crime and terrorist threats, and good interpersonal and customer service skills. The postholder will be able to act decisively and appropriately in an emergency, write clear, concise reports, and be sensitive to customer and staff requirements.

This is a full time, permanent role in Band 7 - Coordinators. Net working hours (i.e. excluding 1 hour per day in rest breaks) will be an average of 38.5 per week, working a shift pattern of 4 days on 4 days off, of 12 hours duration from 6.15am to 6.15pm and 6.15pm to 6.15am, including Bank Holidays. In certain circumstances you will also be required to work such additional hours as are necessary for the proper performance of your duties. These hours may be changed with reasonable notice.

We offer a culture encouraging inclusion and diversity, pension, 28 days annual leave, training and development opportunities, free or discounted admissions and more.

Salary: £26,418 per annum

Diversity and inclusion are integral to our work at Royal Museums Greenwich, as we are a museum for everyone. We want to foster a spirit of inclusion, collaborative working, innovation, and valuing people as individuals whose lives have been shaped by different experiences. Therefore, we welcome applications from everyone. We also actively work with the Disability Confident scheme and ask that you let us know if there are any adjustments you need during the interview process.
