How you'll make a difference
As a Senior Software Engineer, you will help to shape and build future digital solutions that deliver services to the residents, businesses, and front-line key workers of South Gloucestershire.
You will build website and portal features with standards-based HTML, CSS and JavaScript libraries, often integrating via APIs. (Behind the scenes we have several key business applications and we’re primarily using a Microsoft-centric technology stack that includes Dynamics 365, Power Platform, and Azure PaaS services to drive workflow, integrate with back-office systems and deliver core business functionality. In some cases, content management capability is provided through WordPress.)
Your main duties will be:
- You will be working as part of an Agile Development team to develop front-end websites and portals for staff and citizens.
- You will be intergrating front-end experiences via APIs to back-end platform services including (but not limited to) Dynamics 365, Power Apps, Power Automate, SharePoint.
- You will be integrating documented components such as payment gateways and spatial mapping solutions into user journeys.
- The role requires you to apply and refining the councils Digital Design Manual which defines our Government Digital Service (GDS) influenced standards-based framework for delivering a high-quality user experience.
- You will unit test own work, participating in peer review of other’s work.
- Troubleshooting and issue resolution across existing front-end codebase.
- You will communicate effectively with other Software Engineers and other key members of project teams to ensure successful delivery outcomes.
- You will transitioning technical solutions into production through contributing to effective documentation and handover to operational service teams.
In a typical working day, you will:
- Work on designing, building, configuring and unit testing items from the sprint backlog.
- Attend agile ceremonies and a variety of online meetings as necessary throughout the week to discuss the projects that you are working on with people in the team – for example work estimation, problem solving, peer review.
- Be part of a supportive and productive agile development team that is building solutions with modern technology.
- Be learning all the time and diversifying your skills through working with other Software Engineers, testers, and analysts.
Examples of the type of projects you work on could include:
- Providing new digital tools to support our Social Care teams.
- Extending the services available via our public website portal.
- Delivering new mobile solutions to our Streetcare teams.
This role sits within the council’s Information, Technology & Digital Service as part of the Design Develop and Transition area. We deliver digital solutions to citizens and staff, working across several agile development teams. We take a primarily low-code approach using our standard technology platform (Dynamics 365, Power Platform, Azure PaaS) and configurable COTS business systems.
What we need from you
- You will have excellent verbal and written communication skills including explanation of technical information to non-technical audiences verbally and through documentation.
- You will have a degree in a computer related field, or the equivalent demonstrable technical expertise and/or relevant technical qualifications, suitable for working in a complex environment.
- We require you to have experience in development methodologies and of working in an agile environment.
Technical skills: - You should have significant demonstrable experience of:
- Implementing solutions with HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, JQuery, ReactJS
- Working with SOAP and REST APIs (including JSON and XML)
- WordPress as a Content Management System
- Ideally you will have some experience of:
- Gatsby, GraphQL, in the context of static site generation
- YAML in the context of continuous integration/continuous deployment
- PHP, in the context of WordPress
- OAuth and hybrid identity
- You will be familar with Microsoft technology stack including:
- Dynamics CRM/365, Power Platform (Power Apps, Power Automate)
- Azure PaaS services such as WebApps, Logic Apps, Functions
- SharePoint, Office 365
- PowerShell, Azure CLI
- Azure AD
- You must have strong user experience design skills, rooted in a solid understanding of web standards, accessibility, and best practice from organisations such as GDS.
- It is essential that you have had day-to-day exposure to development tools such as Azure DevOps or Jira, Visual Studio Code, Terraform, GitHub as well as debugging and testing tools such as Cypress, all within the context of an agile development process.
Please note: This is not a datacentre, infrastructure, IaaS role, SharePoint, Teams, or Exchange engineering role. You must have strong front-end developer experience, especially focused on JavaScript, and ideally within a Microsoft-centric environment.
