Job Title: Locum Specialist Governance Lawyer

Location: London – Hybrid Working of 3 days a week office presence

Salary: Negotiable dependent upon experience

Venn Groups specialist legal recruitment team are in collaboration with a Local Authority based in London for a Specialist Governance Lawyer to join their dynamic team and provide expert counsel on complex council governance issues.

The role shall be for 3 months on a rolling contract basis, subject to a case by case evaluation and shall be on a hybrid working basis with a requirement of office presence for 3 days of the week.

The ideal candidate will be either Qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or Fellow of CILEx with a strong track record in handling complex, high-value and sensitive litigation cases and will have extensive knowledge of public law principles, local government decision-making, governance, freedom of information and general data protection regulations.

Duties shall include:

1. To set the strategic framework for the delivery of specialist legal services
2. Deliver a high-quality, sustainable legal service complying with statutory frameworks and meeting Council obligations
3. Provide expert advice and support to the Monitoring Officer and Deputy Monitoring Officers
4. Attend and provide legal advice at meetings, committees, and working groups, focusing on governance issues and council protocols
5. Handle freedom of information requests, parliamentary queries, and regulatory complaints, providing legal assistance to other officers

Qualifications and Experience:

1. Qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Fellow of CILEx with extensive experience in public law and governance
2. Proven track record in advising on complex cases and drafting legal documents
3. In depth understanding of good governance principles and decision-making processes
