Job description

Ensure that all clinical incidents are reported and investigated by the appropriate professional in a timely manner Produce reports that include trend analysis and advice for key stakeholders. The reports will include a review of themes and reported incidents/Events Coordinate investigations and participate in systematic incident investigations, making appropriate use of learning tools and techniques, to capture learning from incidents. Encourage the same systematic approach to incident investigations throughout the Trust Additionally, lead, facilitate and deliver service improvements within the Womens CSU, providing professional and clinical advice as necessary Contribute to the overall delivery and development of the Quality & Safety Agenda. Actively participate in any internal or external governance and patient safety groups as require Ensure timely and accurate feedback to clinical areas, providing assurance that processes is in place to monitor actions for service improvement Gather information from within the service, Trust wide and from external organisations to share learning to minimise harm and engender a positive and proactive governance culture Participate in the gathering of information and supporting of staff during investigations and coroners inquests Support and undertake risk assessments as required Communicate effectively to ensure transparency and support the duty of candour, ensuring effective communication with regards to the implications of clinical risks and incidents and appropriate risk management Develop and contribute to the development of policies and procedural documents Support the Ward and Department Managers in the line management of the midwifery/nursing team, including recruitment, performance management and workforce planning Work with all Matrons to promote the development of midwives and support staff as considered appropriate Participate in the Senior Midwife On Call rota Participate in the bed manager Midwife rota, supporting the daily flow and activities of the acute service. Deputise for Quality and Safety Lead Matron in their absence Implement, monitor and seek to continuously improve standards and the quality of women's and family care and experience Promote evidence based practice Maintain a safe working environment Supervise and maintain accurate written and electronic records using the Trusts documentation systems and standards Ensure the safe use and efficient management of equipment and supplies Be a visible leader who is accessible to patients, visitors and staff, providing professional and clinical leadership adhering and promoting the Trust personal responsibility framework Following appropriate training, participate in complaints investigations procedures Attendance and participation at the monthly quality and safety meetings and other maternity CSU level meetings Attendance at Trust Wide meetings/forums where professional nursing and midwifery issues are discussed Undertake other duties commensurate with the nature and level of responsibility of the post Clinical and Professional To personally adhere to and uphold the NMC Professional Code of Conduct at all times To maintain clinical competence and credibility, acting as a role model for best practice midwifery ensuring that midwifery care is provided to a high standard, and is responsive to a changing service Provide a clinical lead and role model to the midwifery team by delivering highly specialised care as an expert practitioner for women experiencing normal, high risk and highly complex pregnancies Participate in the development and implementation of departmental policies, procedures and guidelines in order to establish goals and standards, ensuring these are met The post holder will be guided by Trust policies and protocols When internal and external recommendations have been identified the post holder will work closely with the team to coordinate these into the Maternity services clinical practice. Where appropriate build on existing research and national guidelines to improve practice Performance Management Deliver a quality, evidence based service Monitor and review the progress of action plans derived from collating evidence to support the completion of such action plans Work with the Matrons to set and monitor clinical and non-clinical performance standards Ensure effective management of human and material resources Manage performance, sickness absence and staff grievances with support from Human Resources and Matrons as required Facilitate the annual appraisals of allocated maternity staff Ensure all maternity targets and key performance indicators that relate to the area of responsibility are delivered Education, Research and Audit Provide leadership, guidance and expertise and contribute to the development and delivery of training related to patient safety and incident management and investigation
