Job description

An opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Nurse Practitioner within St. Paul's Outpatients with the Corneal Team
This is a very busy team with a very diverse cohort of patients and conditions which can lead to poor vision. The post will involve assessment / treatment of ophthalmic patients, participating in the refractive service, Crosslinking service and Research and Audit and learning specific corneal skills /imaging.
The shifts will cover the hours between 8-6pm weekdays - currently we do not cover weekend clinics.
It is desirable that the applicant has at least 2 years’ experience within an Ophthalmic setting.
As this is a highly specialised area we can offer a training period of up to 12 months -(Annexe 21) in order to gain the relevant competencies. Ophthalmic Nurse Practitioner qualification, ( 75% of the top of the Band will be paid until completion of training ).
The successful applicant will be enthusiastic and flexible with good communication skills. it is desirable that they also have teaching /assessing experience for junior staff and students.
An ANNEX 21 (training post) would be considered in order to gain the required qualifications.
The Ophthalmic Nurse Practitioner will have their own clinics, consisting of Triaging/ Assessment/ Examination/ Discharge of patients.

As a Nurse Practitioner, you are encouraged to share ideas and be involved in decision making/ future planning of the role and development of the staff and will also play a part in the forward planning of how services will be delivered in the New Build.
They will be there to support Junior Staff, to teach and develop existing staff members and be an advocate for them.
They will also deputise in the absence of the Band 7.

Management.
1. To manage the ward/department and deputise in the absence of the
Manager. (KSF dimension 21 level 2)
2. To delegate effectively. (KSF dimension 21 level 2)
3. To assess, plan and evaluate patient care and assist others to manage
evidence based nursing care. (KSF dimension 21 level 2)
4. To facilitate communication with other departments and disciplines.
5. Deputise for the band 7 when needed..
6 Maintain a safe environment and report any issues.
7. To contribute to monitoring and control of stock.
8. To ensure that working practices satisfy current Health & Safety regulations and complete Datix forms if needed.
Clinical practice
1. To ensure that patient care meets the highest possible standards in
accordance with Clinical Nursing Guidelines.
2. Work within the Guidelines and boundaries of the NMC Code of Conduct and your own limitations.
Education
1. Participate in assessing students on placement and help
staff to complete their including mandatory training.
Assist in the appraisal system for junior staff and completing personal
Development Plans, and assist in providing opportunity
for their self-development.
2. To participate, in conjunction with the School of Nursing, in the promotion of an active learning environment for student nurses allocated to Ward or Department, both internally and externally.
3. To contribute to the training and development of teams, individuals and self in order to enhance performance and provide a high standard of care to our patients.
4. Take part in nursing audit and research and continually monitor levels of care and initiate changes as required.
Practitioner Role (KSF 8 level 3)1.
1. Participate in Nurse led clinics and Corneal Imaging
2. Participate in the Excimer laser Service and Refractive service.
3 To work in a collaborative manner with all members of the multi-disciplinary team.
4 To co-operate in the development of appropriate standards, guidelines, audits and monitoring of standards.
5. To recognise and implement improvements to the service when necessary.
6 Assist in preparation/setting up for the clinics.
Research
1. Promote research activity amongst the nursing staff
2. Ensure regular audit of practice is undertaken in the department
3. Develop systems of practice to ensure the implementation of changes to practice based on research findings, systematic reviews and where there is sufficient evidence to indicate changes to practice.
