Job description

Job Title: Speech and Language Therapist
Job Location: Oakwood College, Torpoint (PL11)
Salary: Between £25,951.15 - £32,295.35 based on 40 hours per week, Term Time Only.
Contract Type: Permanent
As a Speech and Language Therapist, how do you spend your week? With us, you’d start your day with a morning briefing, updating others and getting updated on the great work the team is doing. Next, you’ll either have a 1-2-1 session with one of the learners you’re supporting, run a group session, or join in with classroom activities. Whatever you find yourself doing, you’ll be making a difference in the life of a student with Learning Disabilities and/or Autism.
When you’re not directly supporting the Learners, you’ll have time to train and educate our teaching colleagues on the best ways for them to support the learners in their class. You’ll have time to work with our onsite creative arts therapist to ensure a collaborative therapeutic approach is taken. You’ll have the time to attend multidisciplinary meetings with parents, teachers, and external partners to ensure the needs of the learners are met.
You’ll also have protected time to develop your own clinical skills with our more experienced therapists. You’ll get clinical supervision and support to complete your competency framework as you grow in confidence with your new clinical skills.
A day in the life of a Speech and Language Therapist will involve:
Taking a trauma informed approach to clinical work. You’ll work with a small caseload of learners who will have varying Learning, Communication, sensory processing, and social interaction needs. You’ll be able to do this through 1-2-1 support, classroom work and group sessions.
Working with the wider team to offer the best support to our learners, including our onsite creative art therapists, teachers, and teaching assistants, and taking part in Multidisciplinary team meetings.
Administration. Whilst doing all your great work with the learners, we’ll need you to keep their records up to date and carry out all the administrative tasks you’d expect to come with this role. Don’t worry though, during the school holidays you can work from home so that you have the space to do this without it impacting the time you spend with the learners.
To be a successful Speech and Language Therapist, you’ll need:
A recognised Degree in Speech and Language Therapy, along with HCPC Registration and membership with the Royal College of Speech and Language.
Good IT skills – We’ll train you on how to use our systems, but it would help if you had a working understanding of using Microsoft packages like Excel, Word, Outlook and Teams.
A full driving licence. Whilst this role is based in a single location, there will be times that you need to attend meetings offsite which would require the use of a vehicle.
If you have experience working within the NHS, the best way for us to describe the level of experience needed for this role would be to consider it a “Band 5” position. Whilst we usually do what we can to consider newly qualified candidates, this role would require someone to have some experience working at a Speech and Language Therapist.
In return for your time, you’ll get:
Holidays – In this role, you'll only work term time (42 weeks). You'll also be paid 5.6 weeks (28 days) holiday which will be spread across the year.
Pension scheme– Our pension scheme is based on you paying in 5%, and us adding 3%.
Learning & Development Opportunities – We provide comprehensive learning opportunities for team members to develop themselves.
Discounts – You’ll have access to brilliant discounts through the Blue Light Card and our own employee benefits platform.
Wellbeing Support – Your wellbeing is always our priority. You’ll have access to mental health and wellbeing support. On top of this, our therapies team offers a monthly confidential check in clinic, and group reflective practice sessions.
Cycle2Work -The cycle to work scheme enables you to buy a bicycle at a discounted rate.
DBS – As this role required you to have an enhanced DBS carried out, we will cover this cost.
After 12 months service you’ll also be eligible for our Medicash scheme which covers a wide range of medical, health and wellbeing expenses (Including immediate access to a GP!). You’ll get life assurance paid at x2 your annual salary.
At Phoenix Learning and Care, we pride ourselves on our diverse workforce, and ensuring we have an inclusive environment for all our team members. We remain committed to ensuring our teams can bring their true selves to work without risk or fear of discrimination.
