JOB TITLE: Student Medical and Welfare Assistant (part time considered)

JOB PURPOSE: The Medical Welfare Officer is responsible for the first aid arrangements in the school and the health care of students while at the school. The Welfare Officer will assist staff in supporting students with health problems, through liaison with heath authority staff and other health agencies.

Hours: 37.5 hours or 20 hours per week (term time only)

Working Pattern: Monday – Friday, 8am – 4pm Would consider 10am – 2pm if part-time hours required.

Salary: £25,650 per annum (FTE) Take-home £22,034.34

Role Purpose:

· To assess the medical needs of students and staff and to administer front-line first aid.

· To co-ordinate the NHS school-based immunisation programmes

· To ensure that pupils with ongoing medical needs are supported in school in line with their Individual Health Care Plans, administer approved medication to students, maintain records and report, including those for statutory requirements.

Role Tasks:

· To carry out first and medical treatment to students as and when necessary and provide and medical provision during the academy day. This includes keeping an accurate record of incidents, including students with medical conditions within the academy.

· Be responsible for administering prescribed drugs which are necessary to be taken by pupils during the school day, ensuring that parental consent is obtained and recorded.

· Maintaining the medical register.

· Be responsible for the safe keeping of prescribed drugs in a locked cupboard.

· Co-ordinate, administer and maintain Individual Health Care Plans and risk assessment for pupils with specific medical needs in conjunction with parents, the SEND Team and any other relevant health care professionals. Ensure these are communicated to relevant staff members.

· Work with the Attendance Officer and Year Teams to support pupil attendance in school.

· To ensure that all first aid equipment in the academy is fit for purpose, ensuring kits are stocked and supplies are suitable for appropriate use. This includes the ordering of medical supplies for use within the academy.

· To promote appropriate health guidance, wellbeing advice and other supportive strategies to students as necessary.

· Coordinate the vaccination schedules for key year groups in line with the guidance set out by the government health organisations. This includes the collection of data and correspondence with parents and carers. Including the delivering and contact with relevant healthcare professions. These days will vary year upon year.

· To coordinate and create appropriate risk assessments for any physical, wellbeing and mental conditions. This includes supporting with and completing referrals for services such as CAMHs, Sexual Health, MASH and the school nursing team.

· Ensure teaching and support staff have appropriate awareness and understanding of the common medical conditions in the school.

· Attend whole Academy, department briefings and INSET training sessions, with the desire to continuously improve your practice and share best practice.

· Liaise with other educational settings, parents and students to deliver effective transitions from both primary and to post -16 settings for students with acute medical needs.

· Provide relevant updates and continuous CPD to stakeholders and students (when necessary) on first aid qualifications to support for students with areas such as the use of medical equipment.

· Undertake regular safeguarding as required.

General responsibilities

  • Contribute to the overall ethos / work aims of the Academy.

  • Help to foster and enhance strong links with local, national and global business and education providers to support and develop opportunities for the Academy.
  • Participate in training and other learning activities as required.
  • Undertake relevant training as required to support the functions of the post and to enhance personal development.
  • Attend meetings as and when required.
  • Undertake any other duties as specified by the Principal and Senior Leadership Team.
