Job description

Ideas | People | Trust
We're BDO. An accountancy and business advisory firm, providing the advice and solutions entrepreneurial organisations need to navigate today's changing world.
We work with the companies that are Britain's economic engine - ambitious, entrepreneurially-spirited, and high-growth businesses that fuel the economy - and directly advise the owners and management teams leading them.
We'll broaden your horizons
The Tax Quality and Risk team are responsible for the training, policies, and guidance, which help to ensure we operate effectively within a heavily-regulated profession. Friendly and supportive, you'll have lots of opportunities to learn and collaborate as part of this team. You'll provide leadership, guidance, and tools to help our tax partners and staff to manage Quality and Risk to ensure we continue to provide our clients with high quality accountancy and business services. It's a full-on role, with lots of responsibility, making significant decisions on a daily basis. Sound like your kind of challenge?
The Role - What you will be doing
The primary responsibility will be to assist the Tax Quality and Risk team (of which you will be an important part) in the provision of risk management support to the tax stream, helping client tax teams to understand and adhere to the firm's policies and procedures in carrying out their roles to provide quality service. In this busy and rewarding role you will be mainly:
  • Providing support in responding to tax risk management queries from tax stream partners and staff including dealing with client take on, contractual (engagement letter, confidentiality agreements and hold harmless terms), audit independence queries; often with tight deadlines.
  • Taking ownership of certain operational processes and manage the end-to-end process on a day-to-day basis
You will also over time become involved in supporting the tax risk management functions that ensure operational effectiveness by:
  • Assisting the Tax Quality and Risk team in their risk management activities such as Quality Assurance programmes
  • Participating in the review of the Tax Stream policies and procedures and assisting in drafting policies and guidance
  • Co-ordinating and contributing to the risk communications for the Tax Stream, for example email updates, seminars, webinars and on internal website pages
  • Liaising with the wider risk community, the central risk team, and the legal team, where necessary
  • Helping to maintain tax templates including engagement letters and other contracts on direction from senior members of the team
  • Helping the Tax Stream respond to any challenges arising from new HMRC initiatives or from external regulators on direction from senior members of the team
  • Assisting in training or supervising junior staff
  • Involvement in ad hoc risk projects led by senior members of the team
You'll be someone:
  • With a Professional services background
  • Who will have formal risk management knowledge and experience
  • Well presented with, most importantly, a professional level of communication - both verbal and written
  • Ability to research, analyse, interpret, apply good judgement, and communicate effectively to provide the support of the risk processes of the firm
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Good knowledge of all Microsoft packages
  • Good academic background - ATT or legal qualifications preferred but not essential
  • Be proactive and adaptable to deliver a solution driven approach to their work
  • Excellent time management, organisation skills and the ability to prioritise
  • Ethically minded
  • Part Time considered (minimum 3.5 days a week)
You'll be able to be yourself; we'll recognise and value you for who you are and celebrate and reward your contributions to our business. We're committed to agile working, and we offer everyone the opportunity to work in ways that suit them, their teams, and the task at hand.
At BDO, we'll help you achieve your personal goals and career ambitions, and we have programmes, resources, and frameworks that provide clarity and structure around career development.
We'll help you succeed
Leading organisations trust us because of the quality of our advice. That quality grows from a thorough understanding of their business, and that understanding comes from working closely with them and building long-lasting relationships.
You'll be someone who is both comfortable working proactively and managing your own tasks, as well as confident collaborating with others and communicating regularly with senior managers, directors, and BDO's partners to help businesses effectively.
We're in it together
Mutual support and respect is one of BDO's core values and we're proud of our distinctive, people-centred culture. From informal success conversations to formal mentoring and coaching, we'll support you at every stage in your career, whatever your personal and professional needs.
Our agile working framework helps us stay connected, bringing teams together where and when it counts so they can share ideas and help one another. At BDO, you'll always have access to the people and resources you need to do your best work.
We know that collaboration is the key to creating value and satisfying experiences at work, so we've invested in state-of-the-art collaboration spaces in our offices. BDO's people represent a wealth of knowledge and expertise, and we'll encourage you to build your network, work alongside others, and share your skills and experiences. With a range of multidisciplinary events and dedicated resources, you'll never stop learning at BDO.
We're looking forward to the future
