Job purpose

To provide outstanding teaching, maintaining the high standards of the Collegiate. This job description is written at a specific time and is subject to change as the demands of the Collegiate and the role develops. The role requires flexibility and adaptability and the employees of the Collegiate need to be aware that they may be asked to perform tasks and be given responsibilities not detailed in this job description. The Humanities Department

The Humanities department comprises of Geography and History and has a team of 9 full and part time teaching staff. The department is friendly, supportive and innovative and enjoys considerable success in examinations at GCSE and A level. The department is based on the first floor of a separate building and has 5 specialist teaching rooms. Each classroom is equipped with a white board, TV and computer monitor. Teaching staff use Surface Pros to cast to the TV screen. The KS3 History curriculum focuses on developing the skills required for Edexcel GCSE and introduces content to support this. The units studied at GCSE are Medicine in Britain, Henry VIII & Ministers 1509-40, Superpower relations and Cold War & USA 1954-75. At A level, we study the OCR specification specialising in the Later Tudors, Democracy & Dictatorship in Germany and Civil Rights in the USA. The department is well resourced and is highly regarded in terms of teaching, learning and pupil feedback/support.

The department works very closely together, with most staff teaching both geography and History at KS3. All pupils study both Humanities in Year 7 and Year 8 and then opt in Year 9, although a large number continue with both subjects. Uptake at GCSE and A level continues to be positive. Lesson resources are stored centrally and every teacher contributes, thereby encouraging the sharing of best practice and providing a consistent experience for all pupils.

Each year group has a curriculum related visit/field trip and all members of Humanities are involved in planning and participation in these department events.
