Job title:        Teacher - Inclusion Support – Pupil Tuition Team 

Salary:            M1 to M6 (£30,000.00 to £41,333.00)

Hours:            37 hours a week 

Contract:        Full time permanent 

Location:        West Leeds Activity Centre and other LCC sites. 

As an Inclusion Teacher you’ll thrive on understanding the needs of pupils who are temporarily unable to attend school. You will be able to use a range of teaching strategies to promote effective learning and help to develop skills that enable pupils to return to their school. You will be adept at ensuring positive relationships form the basis of your work with pupils, schools, other agencies, and parents/carers.

About the role 

This is an important role within the Children Missing out on Education Team – you will work along side other staff who work hard to enable pupils to return to mainstream education and develop resilience to support their return. Sometimes you will provide teaching to a small group and sometimes on a one to one basis. You will work with schools to find the best way to support pupils to engage in learning in a positive way and integrate successfully back into school. 

As our next Inclusion Teacher, you will, as part of a team, prepare vulnerable students to re-engage with learning. 

The role is integral to our Children Missing out on Education team. Our team includes the school attendance team, the elective home education team, the children missing education team and the exclusions team. Together we work with vulnerable pupils to secure their education and promote healthy life long learning habits.

Job Description

Job Purpose 

To provide tuition to vulnerable learners across all key stages who are temporarily unable to access education in school and to support engagement in learning with these pupils in accordance with the Child Friendly Leeds goals of: readiness for school, improving behaviour, attendance, and achievement, reducing the numbers of young people who are not in employment, education, or training. To lead the teaching and learning of Maths within the Pupil Tuition Team.

Responsibilities 

  • To teach pupils who experience social, emotional, and mental health difficulties which temporarily affect their access to mainstream education. Currently teaching takes place in the PTT base at the West Leeds Activity Centre.
  • To take responsibility for planning, preparing, and teaching appropriate work for pupils as agreed with the referring school.
  • To support and contribute to the development of curriculum and other initiatives in the PTT.
  • To lead on the teaching of Mathematics within the Pupil Tuition Team.
  • To attend multi-agency meetings and to liaise with parents, schools, and other agencies as appropriate.
  • To create a positive learning environment, which promotes engagement and raises expectations for vulnerable learners.
  • To prepare written reports as necessary for assessing, planning, monitoring, reviewing, and evaluating the progress of pupils.
  • To ensure that all data management systems relating to safeguarding and attendance and kept up to date.
  • To work with schools to plan and support the re-integration of pupils into schools.
  • To work collaboratively with colleagues within Leeds City Council Learning Inclusion Service in line with the vision and goals of Child Friendly Leeds.
  • To be proactive in keeping aware of National Strategies and Key Phase developments within Mathematics and the Inclusion Agenda.
  • To participate in any scheme within a national and local framework for the performance management of staff.
  • To perform all duties as defined in the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document 2023 and Guidance on School Teachers Pay and Conditions.
  • To attend Service Meetings as directed.

Essential requirements It is essential that the candidate should be able to demonstrate the following criteria for the post. Candidates will only be shortlisted for interview if they can demonstrate that they meet all the essential requirements.

  • Qualified teacher status.
  • Excellent self-management/organisational skills.
  • Able to form constructive relationships with pupils, parents, school staff and other professionals.
  • Able to use a range of teaching strategies to promote effective learning.
  • Able to plan lessons and sequences of lessons to meet a wide range of individual student’s needs.
  • Successful experience of teaching Maths across key stages within a mainstream school.
  • Successful experience of teaching pupils whose behaviour can be challenging.
  • Understanding of the needs of pupils with social, emotional, and mental health difficulties.

Desirable requirements It is desirable that the candidate should be able to demonstrate the following criteria for the post.  Candidates are not required to meet all the desirable requirements however these may be used to distinguish between candidates. 

  • Ability to teach Mathematics across key stages.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and DfE guidance.
  • Secure, up-to-date, and thorough knowledge of Mathematics teaching up to GCSE level.
  • Knowledge of how school pastoral systems operate.
  • Understand the vision and goals of Child Friendly Leeds.
