Job Description

Job Title:Teaching Assistant

Location: Across the Trust (based at Ivybridge Community College currently)

Grade: Dependent on experience(Devon Legacy Pay Scales, Grade C, SCP 5-7) £24,702 - £26,421 per annum (£17,444 - £18,658 pro rata)

Hours: 31.25 hours a week, 38 weeks per year

Reports to: Head of SEND/SENDCo

Job Purpose

All our Teaching Assistants play an important role in assisting with support for students to enable them to access the full range of curricular opportunities (academic and enrichment) the College has to offer. The roles and responsibilities outlined in this job description are not comprehensive or exclusive and may be varied from time to time to allow the College to respond to the individual needs of students. The post holder may therefore be expected to take on other reasonable activities to assist in efficient service delivery.

Individuals will work under the instruction and guidance of teaching/senior staff to undertake work/care/support programmes, to enable access to learning for students and to assist the teacher in the management of students and the classroom. Work may be carried out in the classroom or may regularly take place outside the main teaching area.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Attend to the welfare and personal care of students, including those with special educational needs and medical needs.
  • Work with small groups or one to one. Undertaking general clerical/organisational support for the teacher.
  • Deliver pre-determined learning/care/support programmes.
  • Implement intervention programmes.
  • Assist with the planning cycle.
  • Undertake general clerical/administrative support for the teacher/department when deemed necessary.

Supporting the Students

  • Supervise and provide particular support for students, including those with special educational needs, ensuring their safety and access to learning activities.
  • Help to develop appropriate resources for the student and assist in their weaker areas, e.g. reading, presentation, behaviour, etc.
  • Clarify and explain instructions clearly and help students to concentrate and finish work.
  • Liaise with the class teacher and the SEND Coordinator.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of Individual Education My Plans/Behaviour Plans and Personal Care Programmes (Health Care Plan).
  • Establish constructive relationships with students and interacting with them according to their individual needs.
  • Promote the inclusion and acceptance of all students by their peers.
  • Motivate and encourage students to interact with others and to engage in activities led by the teacher.
  • Set challenging and demanding expectations and promote self-esteem and independence.
  • Meet physical needs as required.
  • Support the use of ICT (including Claroreader, C-Pens, OneDrive etc.) in learning activities and develop student confidence and independence in its use.

Supporting the Teacher

  • Create and maintain a purposeful, orderly and supportive environment in accordance with lesson plans.
  • Use strategies, in liaison with the teacher, to support students to achieve learning goals.
  • Assist with the planning of learning activities on a regular basis and adjusting these to the needs of the individual student.
  • Monitor students’ responses to learning activities and accurately recording achievement/progress as directed.
  • Participate in the evaluation of support programmes.
  • Contribute to the review of My Plans and, where appropriate, EHCPs.
  • Provide detailed and regular feedback to teachers and SENDCos on students’ achievement, progress, problems etc.
  • Promote good student behaviour, dealing promptly with conflict and incidents in line with established policy and encouraging students to take responsibility for their own behaviour.
  • Establish constructive relationships with parents/carers and where appropriate participating in feedback sessions with parents/carers alongside the teacher.
  • Administer routine tests, invigilate examinations and undertake routine marking of students’ work.
  • Provide clerical/administrative support e.g. photocopying, typing, filing, money, administration of course work, etc. where necessary.

Supporting the College

  • Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, and reporting all concerns to an appropriate person.
  • Be aware of and support difference, ensuring all students have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop.
  • Be aware of and follow College procedures and contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims.
  • Appreciate and support the role of other professionals; liaise, advise and consult with other colleagues.
  • Attend relevant meetings as required.
  • Participate in training and other learning activities and performance development as required.
  • Assist with the supervision of students out of lesson times, including before and after College and at lunchtimes as required.
  • Accompany teaching staff and students on visits, trips and out of College activities as required and take responsibility for a group under the supervision of the teacher.
  • Meet with the SENDCo and other Teaching Assistants termly/half termly.

General

  • Prepare and contribute to Trust wide development by sharing best practice and professional feedback.
  • Assist with the production and analysis of regular reports on activity for use at management meetings and feedback, as appropriate for the role.
  • Maintain designated databases/files in accordance with Trust policies for data governance, as appropriate for the role.
  • Comply with and promote all Trust policies, including Safeguarding, Health and Safety, and Equality and Diversity.

A good level of education to include GCSE (or equivalent) Grade C/Level 6 or above in Mathematics and English
