Brief Description
You’ll help keep our nation moving every single day. This is a critical part of the work we do is the daily upkeep of the rail network.
From establishing safety arrangements to checking the quality of work, you’ll direct and inspire the success of a team involved in everything from inspection and faulting, through to maintenance and renewal.

About the Role
Welding – Leading a team of welders to supporting the track organisation in our Maintenance teams by joining rails using various techniques.
You will develop a sought-after professional skill and have career progression opportunities.
From inspection and faulting through to maintenance and renewal, you’ll play a hands-on role. You’ll make sure everything is done efficiently and to the highest standards. Safety will be a priority. You’ll establish appropriate safety arrangements and make sure Network Rail staff and contractors alike follow safe systems of work. Proactively controlling and checking the quality of work and the competence of your people, you’ll see to it that assets are fully compliant, and all vehicles, plant, tools, equipment and materials are fit for purpose. Along the way, you’ll compile a range of vital reports.

Your duties will include:
- Establish and maintain appropriate safety arrangements for staff under your control including Contractors.
- Carry out work safely and in accordance with the safe systems of work procedures, method statements or other relevant instructions.
- Undertake work and associated duties for which you are trained and competent.
- Undertake and direct work activities in a safe and efficient manner and in accordance with all relevant standards.
- Control and check the quality of work undertaken and confirm assets are compliant to standards.
- Check that the staff under your control have the appropriate and valid competencies.
- Check that vehicles, plant, tools, equipment and materials under your control are fit for use and are used/stored and disposed of correctly.
- Accurately report all work completed/not completed and produce/maintain records as required.
- Contribute to your own development and that of others.
- Adhere to company policies and procedures.
Your skills matter
You ideally would have:
- Able to lead, motivate and direct a team.
- Experience of arranging and implementing safe systems of work.
- Experience of organising and controlling the safe and efficient delivery of work.
- Able to demonstrate, promote and embed safe working behaviours within the team.
- Able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Knowledge and experience of welding and grinding inspection, faulting, maintenance and renewal techniques.
- Knowledge of relevant standards, procedures and instructions.
- Hold and retain competencies relevant to this post, required by business need.
- Able and willing to drive vehicles as required by business need.
What could set you apart:
- Hold or be working towards an NVQ level 2 or 3 (or equivalent) in welding or have attained the appropriate level of knowledge gained through equivalent relevant experience.

Salary and contractual information: £40,638
35-hour week (plus paid overtime if required), 30 days annual leave (exc. bank holidays), shift premiums for nights & weekend working.
Some on call may be required at times.
