Technical Manager (TM)
Responsible for ensuring the site conforms to all aspects of the BRC standards, including but not limited to (1) products meeting food safety, legal, quality and commercial requirements, (2) maintaining A+ grade accreditation, (3) ensuring all customer quality/technical requests are responded to in a timely manner
Key responsibilities
- Ensure site QA meets standards
- Manage site QA systems and processes working closely with the Production Manager (PM) / Operations Manager (OM)
- Initiate and manage all investigations for customer complaints in conjunction with the FM, PM, OM Senior Team as appropriate
- Ensuring all QA procedures are adequate and adhered to especially with respect to Critical Control Points
- Ensure production of a safe & legal product meeting all quality criteria and customer specification requirements
- Approval and maintenance of raw material and final product specifications and labels in a controlled format
- Planning and executing internal factory audits of the site and ensuring non-conformances are reported back to the GM and pursued to an agreed solution
- Controlling and evaluation of the Pest Control measures and activities
- Ensuring hygiene schedules, microbiological testing and swabbing regimes are adequate
- Ensure the above regimes are adhered to and food safety issues are addressed
- Ensuring effective filing of documentation to facilitate customer audits and internal verification
- Validation of the processes
- Controlling the Company’s handling requirements for specific materials
- Providing information as requested by customers
- To carry out any other reasonable requests that help drive the business forward
- Work with other Managers to discuss objectives and understand requirements
- Promoting a safe working environment, particularly in relation to the correct operation of machinery and equipment to ensure the Health & Safety and well-being of all employees
- Ensure that all staff are trained against and follow written procedures
- Operate / manage retailer portals’ technical components
- BRC documents and manuals to be kept up to date
Scope of Responsibility
The Technical Manager is an independent Manager reporting directly to the Managing Director. A TM has the responsibility to manage processes and QA sheets and manuals enabling the PO’s to produce safe final products, which meet the customer’s specification. A TM is expected to work closely with the PM/OM to align technical and operational objectives.
In the event of a product non-conformance situation affecting product safety, Quality Assurance team members have the authority to recommend that lines are stopped. In such non-conforming situations the PM/OM should be informed, should stop the lines and liaise with the GM and other SMT members as appropriate.
Key attributes
- At least 5 years’ food industry experience
- Formal HACCP qualification (or equivalent accreditation)
- Advanced Food Hygiene qualification
- Deep knowledge of quality standards and health and safety regulations essential
- Understanding of production processes
- Understanding of costing concepts and evaluation of performance
- Experience in reporting on key metrics
- Proficient in MS office
- Excellent communication skills, verbal and written
- Excellent organisational skills
- Excellent team player
- Excellent attention to detail is key to this role
