Could you be the full-time Telecoms Network Engineer in Birmingham we’re looking for?


Overview

  • To assist the Principal Telecoms Engineer, Design Engineer and support the Telecoms Engineering Manager.
  • Design, implement and support highly available network architectures, either as a stand alone telecoms solution, or as part of a combined ‘Signalling System’ architecture.
  • Assisting and advising the business by developing guidelines on the usage of complex systems and their components.
  • Work as part of a team and individually where required and is expected to be willing and able to work on any Telecoms element on any project as may be applicable
  • Liaise with Telecoms Technicians and Design, Install and Test staff, and additional collaboration with Signaling Design, Installation and Project Engineering Management is fundamental to the efficient operation of the Telecoms function
  • Understanding of operation telecoms and how these integrate with the Network Rail transmission network

Main Responsibilities


  • Technical expert responsible for designing networks
  • Manage interface between Alstom products and external networks
  • Support the tendering process
  • Manage, design, install, and test hardware and software in support of Alstom products
  • Assist in developing networking solutions for new products for introduction onto the UK network.
  • Undertake site surveys.
  • Effectively maintain supplier relationships.
  • Good knowledge and awareness of CDM/CSM regulations.
  • Manage and monitor the design which may also include Alstom off-shore designers.
  • Identify variations/changes to contract and asses impact on cost, programme and workload.
  • Checking / Verification of designs including non-telecoms discipline designs.
  • Assist in the production / checking of test plans and testing specifications.
  • Attendance at meetings with clients, senior management, sub-contractors and internal project team.
  • To ensure delegated areas of the contract are completed to meet legislation and relevant standards.
  • Effectively communicate contract requirements to staff and sub-contractors.
  • Motivate staff and sub-contractors.
  • Review all relevant documentation.
  • Assist when required, during installation, testing and commissioning phases of a project.
  • Understanding of appropriate legislation

Relevant Experience

  • Significant experience in managing network architectures and deployment
  • Advanced level knowledge of routing and switching
  • Knowledge of working with firewalling technologies
  • Confident communication and customer liaison skills
  • IT Literate, competent in the use of Microsoft Office Tools
  • Self-reliant but also able to work in a team
  • Organisational skills
  • Troubleshooting and fault-finding skills

Educational Requirements

Mandatory:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology educated within a relevant technical field or equivalent
  • CCNA / CCNP accreditation

Desirable:

  • Degree educated within a relevant technical field
  • Cisco Certified Inter-networking Expert (CCIE)
  • IEng/CEng
  • MIET/MIRSE

Experience

Mandatory:

  • Solid understanding of TCP/IP based networks and networking protocols
  • Extensive accomplishment and experience in managing network architectures and deployment
  • Advanced level knowledge of routing and switching
  • Experience of WAN circuits and solutions (eg MPLS / VPN’s)
  • Knowledge of working with firewalling technologies
  • Knowledge of ‘Application Delivery Controllers’
  • Proficient knowledge of networking design
  • Cloud based solutions
  • Understanding of European standards.
  • Awareness of Health, Safety & Environmental requirements.

Desirable:

  • Understanding of relevant Network Rail standards
  • Positive approach
  • Risk assessment skills
  • Knowledge of Signalling and power discipline systems and how telecoms integrate with them
  • Proficient in CAD to a level to be able to produce detailed drawings
  • Knowledge of Alstom processes
