Job description

We are currently recruiting for Terminal Controllers to join our control team, who are the hub of our operational business, at London Gateway Port, DP World. This role is responsible for observing and managing the movements of vehicles and containers throughout the terminal, both shipside and landside. This involves remotely operating the ASC’s (Automated Stacking Cranes), ensuring compliance with company standards, policies, and procedures while adhering to instructions from the shift manager or control room manager.

We are searching for a candidate with strong IT system knowledge, who can perform well under pressure and has experience in a position requiring clear and succinct communication. As well as the ability to work proactively, understand the importance of health and safety and showcase forward and critical thinking skills.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Using the terminal operating system to control and monitor the shipside and landside operations, including monitoring ASC operations to ensure yard moves are executed efficiently.
  • Liase with planners, operational staff and managers ensuring that operations proceed and that any problems are dealt with accordingly.
  • Communicate through voice radio, answering all incoming calls from operators and others, accurately and promptly resolving problems.
  • Correct and update the terminal operating systems using the current camera system when containers have been mis-read.
  • Monitor breakdowns associated with all heavy plant machinery (terminal tractor & shuttles), through liaising with engineers and ensuring a full description of the issue to assist with the diagnosis.
  • Accurately and speedily interpret written and verbal instruction and apply to the operation.
  • Ensure an effective and thorough handover at the start, break and end of shift.
  • Have a thorough knowledge of the company’s operating procedures.

Qualities, Experience & Skills:

  • Minimum of 1 years’ experience working within a port or comparable industry
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to work under sustained pressure;
  • Good organisational skills with attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Proficient in all Microsoft applications and bespoke systems (terminal systems preferred)
  • Adaptability to changing priorities and multitasking efficiently in a dynamic setting.
  • Ability to maintain high levels of concentration at all times
  • Flexibility with the ability to work shifts and to work overtime when necessary
