We are looking for a Test & Development Engineer to join our Test & Development department. The successful candidate will be responsible for body systems and structure test work, ranging from in-service failures component investigation to multi-vehicle test and sign-off programmes. A significant portion of the role involves conducting tests to ensure that supplier components meet installation guidelines when installed into our vehicles.
Day to Day of the role:
Lead proactive projects, showing initiative and ownership.
Seek technical solutions using internal and external resources, managing these solutions effectively.
Develop basic project plans that align with business requirements.
Provide clear guidance and create concise documentation to resolve issues.
Lead test activities, including managing and procuring parts, vehicle or rig test build/modification, conducting tests, analysing results, and report writing.
Apply appropriate instrumentation and data logging systems, arrange test facilities, and provide technical expertise to the T&D team.
Ensure tests are technically fit for purpose, objective, conclusive, and meet legislation or supplier sign-off criteria.
Provide clear instructions to T&D technicians, defining tests and work instructions.
Plan test details according to company project plans and organise resources to meet project milestones.
Spend time in the workshop or at proving grounds, both in the UK and overseas, instructing staff on required test work, carrying out vehicle/rig inspections, operation, and test execution.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
Experience in the automotive industry, particularly with buses, coaches, HGVs, specialist vehicles, or tier-1 suppliers.
Basic knowledge of CAN-based systems for both vehicle and data acquisition.
Solid understanding and experience of vehicle systems, especially drive line systems (Mech & Electrical), air systems, structural testing, and supplier sign-off testing.
Vehicle test environment experience, including instrumentation and data logger software.
Ability to guide T&D Technicians and a hands-on approach, including workshop skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft packages and data analysis software; CAD understanding is beneficial.
Willingness to travel and spend time at test facilities and customer sites, including occasional overseas travel.
Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.
