Job overview

The Thoracic Theatre Team at UHS are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic registered nurse / operating department practitioner with excellent leadership skills to join our service.

The Thoracic theatres at UHSFT operate up to nine all-day lists from Monday to Saturday and last year we performed ca. 1000 surgical procedures; our service includes open thoracotomies, Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgeries (VATS), complex airway procedures including Hybrid procedures, and Robot-Assisted Thoracic Surgery (RATS). We also do rib fixations and chest wall reconstruction surgery.

We are inviting applications from highly-skilled and motivated individuals with demonstrable thoracic scrub experience and excellent leadership qualities. Detailed job description and main responsibilities

What you’ll do:

We are looking for a dynamic and inclusive leader with excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills, alongside competent decision-making to support the team in delivering high standards of patient care within theatre. Having a commitment to developing others is key in this role and you will be required support the theatre department’s management structure. As the service develops further an early adopter of change for innovative working will also be required.


What we’re looking for:

  • Current and relevant scrub and leadership experience, with extensive Thoracic Surgery experience including Robot-assisted surgery.

  • Foundation management course or equivalent.

  • Flexible working

  • Clinical management experience

  • Mentorship Course or equivalent

Qualifications, knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Registered ODP / nurse
  • Degree-level education or equivalent experience
  • Experience at band 6 level
  • Provide evidence of Leading learning in practice
  • Provide evidence of Support colleagues to promote learning in practice providing an excellent learning environment for all
  • Provide evidence of Supporting /managing and supervision a range of learnings in practice
  • Aware of current NHS and professional issues
  • Ability to network and build relationships within and across professions
  • Experience of developing nursing and allied health profession / perioperative practice
  • Appropriate Specialist qualification
  • Evidence of Formal Management Training
Desirable criteria
  • Act in the role of Practice Assessor or supporting the progression of learners / supporting challenges as needed
  • Commenced MSc Academic Pathway
  • Multi skilled in more than one area of speciality
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Sound leadership and effective role modelling capabilities
  • Experience at Band 7 Level
  • Experience in Robotic Thoracic Surgery
  • Extensive experience in Thoracic Surgery

Getting to Work

Application can be made for parking on site at UHS or through one of the park and ride schemes. This will be based on specific criteria to determine eligibility for site parking as this can be very limited.  UHS encourages staff to utilise other green methods of getting to work such as cycling or walking where possible. UHS is well connected through bus services to the city centre and other areas.
