Job description

The Youth Justice Service (YJS) are looking for a YJS Trauma Informed Practitioner to lead on further developing and embedding a Trauma Informed Approach within the team, and wider partner services the YJS work alongside. The successful candidate will take on Portfolio Lead within the team for this work.

The successful candidate will become part of a multi-disciplinary YJS team which includes YJS Managers, Social Workers, Caseworkers, Victim Liaison Officer, Speech & Language Therapist, Turnaround Early Help worker, CAMHS Worker and seconded Police & Probation Officers.

The role will involve hybrid working which will see the worker engaging with children, young people and their families in an office environment, in school and at home, and in other community settings. The successful applicant will have an office base at the Youth Justice Service offices at Moor Lane Youth Centre, in the West of the City.

The aim of the role will be to develop Trauma Informed practice within the YJS and other services we work alongside.

This role will include developing practitioners’ knowledge, skills and competence in up-to-date theories and work practices around Trauma Informed approaches. This will involve providing ad hoc advice and support to staff as well as more structured Effective Practice sessions.

It is recognised that early childhood experiences and trauma impact on children and young people’s behaviour, particularly in relation to the children and young people who are on intervention plans with the YJS.  Helping them make sense of their experiences, and developing both voluntary and court ordered intervention plans is a key part of the role.

If you are an internal candidate interested in applying for this job as a secondment opportunity, please discuss with your current line manager before submitting your application.

City of York Council is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expects all employees and volunteers to share this commitment. We require the successful candidate to undertake an enhanced Criminal Record check via the Disclosure and Barring Service.

As this role is public facing, applicants will need to demonstrate, at interview, their competency to converse and provide advice and guidance to members of the public, in spoken English to CEFR level B2: Can adjust to the changes of direction, style and emphasis normally found in conversation.  Can produce stretches of language with a fairly even tempo; although he/she can be hesitant as he or she searches for patterns and expressions, there are few noticeably long pauses.

The Council is committed to investing in the talent and wellbeing of our staff and can offer a generous annual leave allowance, access to the Local Government Pension Scheme, comprehensive Health & Wellbeing initiatives and a reward package which recognises your contribution. We can offer flexible working practices, community engagement and volunteer activities and, as part of our commitment to you, promote continuous Learning & Development. In addition we also offer a growing range of discounts, rewards and savings.
