Job description

Industry-leading B2B multimedia brand Travel Weekly is seeking a first-class News Reporter (ideally NCTJ accredited) to join its agenda-setting editorial team.

We are looking for go-getting, news-thirsty journalist who wants to break stories, unearth exclusives and throw themselves into an industry from top to bottom – interviewing everyone from small business owners to chief executives of global companies.

The ideal candidate must be comfortable turning their hand to news stories on a range of sub sectors from travel agencies and tour operators to airlines, cruise lines, hotels and technology. They must be able to quickly grasp new terminology and write stories confidently and coherently for a professional audience. There may also be opportunities to progress within the business to a more senior role.

We are seeking a reporter comfortable in multi-media journalism with a proven track record of producing strong stories via traditional print newsgathering skills as well as a strong understanding of social media and telling stories across a range of channels including digital, print and video.

This opportunity to join the industry-leading, agenda-setting B2B news brand for the travel sector involves filing to tight deadlines, be it from our London office, from home or from trade conferences, inaugural flights and cruise ship launches all over the world.

Experience of the travel industry is not essential but we are seeking a candidate with a willingness to learn the sector’s unique issues and apply their proven journalistic experience to the role to be able to hit the ground running.

Responsibilities:

  • Write and upload news stories for travelweekly.co.uk, contributing to two email newsletters every weekday
  • Produce exclusive and agenda-setting stories for the weekly print magazine
  • Curate and file product stories in the weekly roundup ‘news you can use’ section
  • Attend and file from industry events, ranging from evening product launches in the UK to overseas conferences, inaugural flights, cruise ship launches and more. This includes representing Travel Weekly at events outside of working hours
  • Building and nurturing contacts in the sector

Essential:

  • Experience in a news reporting role on a local, national or trade publication
  • A strong portfolio of exclusive and agenda-setting news stories
  • An eye for detail and a hunger to be first with the news and break stories
  • Enthusiasm and energy to attend industry events and conferences to source stories and build contacts
  • Solid organisational skills and an ability to manage workloads in a deadline-driven environment
  • Adept with social media, both for sourcing and communicating stories

Desirable:

  • Experience presenting, producing and editing videos
  • Experience of stepping up to fulfil newsdesk duties
  • An understanding of the issues facing the travel industry, especially since the onset of Covid-19
  • Network of contacts in the travel trade

About the company:

Travel Weekly is the market-leading title for the UK travel trade, with unrivalled reach in print, online, on social media and through its agenda-setting events portfolio.

During a challenging period for the industry, while other travel publications scaled back, Travel Weekly substantially increased support for its trade audience with twice-daily email newsletters, webcast interviews, significant growth in social media and a redesign of its website, in addition to continuing its flagship weekly publication in print and online.

Parent company Jacobs Media Group – the global voice for the travel and hospitality industries with a portfolio that also includes The Caterer, Aspire, Travolution and Connections – has also continued to innovate over the past year, launching a successful new brand and office in the Middle East and leading the way for the global events industry with new virtual platforms and higher-than-ever audience engagement.
