Job Introduction

We currently have a fantastic opportunity for experienced Flexible Labour Operatives our Labour Team based at Essar Oil Refinery, Ellesmere Port. 

The role will be to support 14forty FM Support Services in delivering the requirements as set out by our client in a safe and efficient manner. The role will include authorised Gas testing and will also include Industrial Labour / Ad-Hoc Support to emergent site projects / requirements.

Duties include:
Authorised Gas Tester (AGT)
  • Carry out gas tests (oxygen, toxic and flammability). 
  • Liaise with the operating team to ensure they are aware of any operating conditions in the area which may affect the job
  • Remain alert to any changes in wind direction, operational activities, vents, leaks, spills and drainage system incidents that may impact on the safety of the job 
  • Stop work and instruct personnel to withdraw at any time when any gas test or other condition indicates it is unsafe for the work to continue
  • Ensure all mobile equipment is compliant with site rules and not left unattended. 
  • Ensure work does not restart after any incident until authorised by a operations. 
  • Verify all permits are valid and in date.  Review all the Permits to Work to ensure the work party is compliant with controls specified
  • Remain in the area on completion of a hot work task for a time period specified by operations to ensure that there is no risk of ignition from smouldering material.
  • Train Gas Tester new hires
  • Ensure compliance of the work party with the site Health, Safety and Environment management system.  Intervene, when necessary, upon observation of unsafe acts or conditions. Report back to HSE Team breaches of Permit conditions
Industrial Labour & Ad-Hoc Labour Duties 
  • Undertaking general industrial labour support as directed by 14forty 
  • Duties to include providing cleaning support to refinery assets at Stanlow oil refinery and Tranmere
  • Ensuring all areas are kept clean and tidy in line with client housekeeping schedule.  
Who you are:
The AGT must demonstrate a detailed knowledge of the following: 
  • Experience of working in a similar role, preferably with Site knowledge of Stanlow Manufacturing Complex 
  • Permits (RA/JHA), site rules, with an understanding of all support documents e.g., method statements, risks assessments including the interpretation of results (i.e., occupational exposure limits, permissible flammability, and oxygen levels).  Ensuring compliance with permit conditions and the actions to be taken if conditions are breached or if operating conditions changed 
  • Understand the roles, responsibilities, and duties of key signatories 
  • Gas Detection Equipment 
  • Use and limitations of oxygen, flammability, and toxic gas detection instruments. 
  • Difference between Standby and 'Start-Off' gas tests   
  • The potential hazards that may be presented by Work in confined spaces, hot work in pipe-tracks and on running unit and Vehicle/crane entry to plant areas.
  • Compliance with control measures identified on the Clearance Note, Standard Control Sheets and client Risk Assessments and Method Statements
  • Obtaining the relevant PPE for the task as identified on the above documents
  • Liaising with client’s representative before commencing work to ascertain work requirements and issues on the plant. 
  • Informing the client and Labour Planner of any activities not covered under the provided documentation
  • Compliance with control measures identified on the Clearance Note, Standard Control Sheets and client Risk Assessments and Method Statements
  • Obtaining the relevant PPE for the task as identified on the above documents
  • Liaising with client’s representative before commencing work to ascertain work requirements and issues on the plant.   Informing the client and Labour Planner of any activities not covered under the provided documentation

  • Displays a responsible, flexible can-do approach to work duties with a passion to provide high standards.  To be polite, professional, and friendly at all times with customers, clients and colleagues
  • Good Health & Safety Compliance, along with Good Values & Behaviours  
  • Confined Space trained / H2S Awareness trained / Escape Set trained / Asbestos awareness / COSHH awareness / Manual handling awareness
  • Undertaking a 4 What’s assessment prior to commencing work and attend safety related meetings, including promoting “Safety Signals” and collecting forms from the workforce
  • Correctly using work equipment, personal protective equipment in accordance with training and instructions provided.
  • Report HSE hazards, accidents, incidents, illness, and diseases to your line Supervisor including all accidents and near misses
  • To make sure you are aware of, and meet the legal and Company requirements for fire, health and safety
