Job description

Being a Volunteering and Community Officer is all about connecting with people. It’s about helping everyone to get involved and feel welcome at National Trust places.

Working predominantly with volunteers and volunteer managers, with some support for local communities, you’ll be making a vital contribution to the Trust’s cause of protecting and caring for places so that people and nature can thrive – now and into the future.

This role may involve managing volunteers. And you should be willing and able to work some weekends and evenings.

If you have a strong understanding of volunteer processes and practices and enjoy working with people, this will be a great role for you.

What it's like to work here

Reporting to the Volunteering & Community Manager, you will join the Volunteering and Community team to support volunteering at the National Trust Bath properties, which include Dyrham Park, Prior Park Landscape Garden, Bath Skyline, Bath Assembly Rooms and Bathampton Meadows. You will be based in an office at Dyrham Park for 1-2 days per week.

With a growing number and variety of volunteer teams as well as recently acquired properties and projects, it’s an exciting time to join us. The Volunteer and Community team work together to meet the needs of the Bath properties, and ensure a positive, flexible, inclusive and safe experiences to everyone who volunteers with us.

What you'll be doing

As our Volunteering and Community Officer, you will be supporting volunteers and volunteer managers with volunteer recruitment, management, communications and growing support. You will lead Welcome Sessions for new volunteers, improve volunteer processes, update and share guidance, and help to make volunteering more attractive and accessible to different audiences.

You will support the Volunteering and Community Assistant to provide administrative support and help to manage effective volunteer communication. Working with the wider team, you will help us to deliver a long-term plan for volunteer participation and engagement across the Bath Portfolio.

  • Enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the benefits of volunteering
  • Someone who loves working with volunteers, and who understands the legal differences between staff and volunteers
  • Good at talking to, and getting on with, all kinds of people from all backgrounds, and you understand why great customer service matters
  • Flexible and collaborative, a team player who’s happy to lead on and work with other people’s agendas towards a shared goal
  • Well-organised, with good attention to detail
  • Experienced in volunteering principles and practice
  • Comfortable with IT skills (Microsoft Office), and managing budgets
