Job description

This is an exciting time to join the Climate, Sustainability & Environment Team and play a key role in making Hackney cleaner, safer and greener. As a Waste Enforcement Officer you will be working between our Millfields Depot and the Hackney Service Centre, working to tackle unregulated waste from commercial properties. This includes waste placed on the street outside of time bands, overproduction of waste against quantities set out in a businesses waste contract and also dealing with any waste placed out that is not covered by a waste contract, in accordance with the Duty of Care Regulations relating to commercial waste.

In this front-line enforcement role the post holder will support the Behaviour Change and Enforcement Manager in investigating waste offences, gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, perpetrators and complainants, producing letters and notices, keeping enforcement records up to date and preparing cases for prosecution. They will also assist and mentor Behaviour Change Officers with residential and commercial waste issues by helping them with complex cases and their more senior tasks.

You will bring experience to the role having previously held a similar position (s) in a team with an enforcement remit. You’ll be a self-starter, able to work to your own initiative whilst following policy and procedures, and able to prioritise a busy caseload to achieve goals. We are also looking for a proven team player, prepared to go that extra mile to support colleagues and to foster safe practices and productive working relationships. You’ll be able to communicate with residents, colleagues and member’s with sensitivity and political awareness, whilst applying legislation and policy with a firm hand.

The role will involve action days and joint operations with other teams and so the successful candidate must be willing to work outside in all conditions, occasionally work out-of-hours (including weekends), and be able to cope with the physical demands of investigating waste and travelling around the borough on foot. The successful candidate must also hold a driving licence and be prepared to drive the work vehicle. It is expected that you will work in the depot / office four days per week with some flexibility based on workload.
