Location: Coleg Llandrillo (North Wales) and Fleet Servicing SOV (UK and Germany).

Requirements: 5 GCSE’s (or equivalent) at 4/C or above including Science, Maths and English.

Salary: £16,500 in the 1st year, rising to £23,412 in the 3rd year. Benefits include pension and private single medical cover.

Wind Turbine Technician Apprenticeship

RWE Renewables are offering the opportunity for motivated people to begin a career in renewable energy with us. This excellent 3 year apprentice scheme will enable the selected candidates to develop into technicians working on Wind Turbines. The first 2 years will be class room based at a bespoke Wind Turbine training facility at Coleg Llandrillo, Rhyl in North Wales.

The 3rd year will consist of on-site training from the Fleet Servicing Operations Vessel which supports turbine maintenance at Greater Gabbard and London Array windfarms in the UK along with Amrumbank, Kaskasi and Nordsee Ost windfarms in Germany.

MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB

We will provide a comprehensive and well supported learning programme including classroom-based learning and experience on site working with our technicians.  Completing the Apprenticeship will result in an NVQ level 3 qualification in Wind Turbine operations and maintenance and a level 3 diploma in Wind Turbine maintenance.

Our Wind Turbine Technicians work as part of a small team dedicated to specific offshore wind farms. Successful candidates will learn to carry out all aspects of Wind Turbine maintenance including scheduled, unscheduled, proactive, and troubleshooting maintenance on Wind Turbines.

Your hard work will ensure our wind farms continue to deliver power to households and business.  It is a rewarding job that allows you to work on highly advanced machinery in a challenging environment. Once trained you will be working at sea, in all weathers and at height, using heavy, complex mechanical and electrical equipment. You will be required to demonstrate a commitment to Health and Safety in all aspects of your work.

Initially the focus will be upon learning and developing engineering knowledge through education and training.  However, examples of the tasks covered as Technicians in the longer term include:

  • Electro/Mechanical problem solving of Wind Turbines working in small teams at height in remote locations with user manuals as reference
  • Working with advanced mechanical, hydraulic and electrical equipment in a safe manner
  • The technicians will be required to plan in advance what tools, spares and materials are required for each job they do
  • Fault find and diagnosis of Wind Turbine main component condition to assist in determining if site repair is possible or whether the unit requires exchange
  • Support inspection of blades and performing minor repairs then writing condition reports
  • Ongoing development to become a multi skilled technician that will cover all aspects of inspection, maintenance and repair of the Wind Turbines

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

The Fleet SOV will perform services 24 hours a day 365 days per year. You will be part of a team that will perform services from the vessel working a 14 day- on 14 day off rotation from ports in the UK and Germany.

You will be keen to learn and undertake a practical role and standby maybe required.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • 5 GCSE’s (or equivalent) at 4/C or above including Science, Maths and English
  • Willing to learn and develop
  • Interest in engineering
  • Able to work a height
  • Able to work at sea
  • Willing to undertake international travel to the service ports
  • Willing to work shifts, staying for up to 2 weeks on a SOV

All apprentices will be expected to study full time for the first 2 years at Coleg Llandrillo,Rhyl in North Wales during term time, before being deployed to one or more of the windfarms supported by the SOV  for the 3rd year for hands-on experience of working on a wind farm.

Accommodation will be provided in North Wales during term time for the first 2 years, along with travel expenses for journeys between the home location and the term time address.

  • Application closing date: 8th March 2024
  • Assessment Centre: WC 29th April 2024
  • Working at height and offshore/onshore fitness assessment centres: June 2024
  • Role start date: August 2024

Accommodation/Travel:

Term-time accommodation will be provided in the North Wales area, with RWE covering the cost of your commute to the college each day. We will provide a shared house with shared facilities, with the costs of rent and utilities also being paid by RWE. Those apprentices under the age of 18 will also have the option to stay with a local family if preferred. Please note however that accommodation is only available while you are at college. 

During term time, there will be a reasonable allowance for food and drink while away from home. Also RWE will pay for travel costs for journeys home at the weekends.

Travel to the assessment centre:

For those candidates invited to the assessment day, all reasonable travel costs will be paid by RWE. This will be discussed with you upon invitation.

Holidays

25 days (to be taken outside of term time), plus public holidays.
