Fleet Management is a key support service for many internal and external customers at Coventry City Council. We are based in a fully equipped vehicle workshop at our Whitley Depot site and are responsible for the repair and maintenance of approximately 500 items including vehicles and plant machinery and equipment. We are also responsible for the provision of fuel to our customers, and in addition provide a driver training service to many customers.

What is the job role?You will be responsible for supervising and delivering a high-quality, value-for-money, and customer-focused Fleet Workshop service. Ensuring all fleet items are maintained in compliance with legislative and Fleet Policy requirements, agreed service level agreement standards and targets are achieved, and full recovery of Workshop expenditure is achieved through effective control of designated budgets and timely and accurate invoicing to customers.
You will be required to control and supervise the operation and workforce related to Fleet Workshops, including programming of workloads, allocating resources, and carrying out final and in-service quality inspections (to ensure work is undertaken efficiently and effectively to contractual requirements).
You will effectively manage the day-to-day vehicle maintenance & repair activities on a shift rotation basis. This person is key in making sure we stay on top of our legal obligations and safety requirements. They are also the master technician and first aid person on shift whenever the 12 technicians, 3 apprentices, and 3 general assistants need support.
Who are we looking for?In addition to your qualification, you are likely to have extensive practical experience in fleet service, repair, and maintenance including plant and large commercial vehicles.
You will know the legislative requirements of legally maintaining an HGV fleet and have some supervisory or management experience within the vehicle maintenance and repair industry. You will have a flexible approach to work, good communication and organisational skills, and an ability to supervise the output of a team to deliver the agreed service objectives.
It would be also desirable, but not essential to be a qualified MOT tester.
