About the Department:
The Access, Participation and Student Success (APSS) department is based in the Student and Academic Services Directorate alongside Academic Services, Registry, Careers, Student Advice and Wellbeing, and Student Experience, Engagement and Retention.
APSS is responsible for delivering, monitoring and reviewing initiatives aimed at improving outcomes for students from backgrounds underrepresented in higher education, and takes the lead in activities delivered under the School’s Access & Participation Plans. The team works across the student life-cycle, partnering with a range of external partners, including schools, and internally with academic departments and professional services, to create and deliver a varied programme of activities.
About the Role
The Access, Participation & Student Success Manager (Success) is a key role in the Access, Participation and Student Success department which forms part of SOAS’ Student and Academic Services Directorate. The purpose of the role is to develop, implement and manage the School’s widening participation activities that support the retention and success of students from low participation neighbourhoods, disadvantaged backgrounds, care leavers, mature students, disabled students and students from different ethnic backgrounds. Working collaboratively with departments across the School and external organisations to support high quality student success activities.
About you:
You will need to demonstrate:
- Knowledge of issues around widening access/student success and participation in higher education.
- Experience of working with students in school, college or university.
- Commitment to, and understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion in education.
- Ability to work under pressure individually or as part of a team to meet tight timescales and ambitious targets.
- Line management experience.
- Good organisational and programme management skills.
- Good written and oral communication skills with the ability to communicate with staff at all levels.
