As an apprentice you’ll be receiving practical and professional training right from the start. Working alongside experienced colleagues who will supervise your development and a dedicated mentor providing support and guidance throughout your training. At Southampton City Council we are committed to paying Foundation Living Wage as a minimum and we believe apprentices should also be paid fairly. Your salary as an apprentice will be £23,151 (pro rata) annually and may increase in line with any national rise in Foundation Living Wage.

Although we can’t guarantee you a permanent job at the end of your apprenticeship, we will support you to apply for other roles within the council, and help make sure you are ready for a wider job search with support from our Employment Skills team.

About the role:

We are looking for a confident and conscientious individual to undertake the role of Apprentice Supported Housing Cleaner.

You will need to be a positive and enthusiastic person and will be responsible for ensuring good standards of cleanliness are maintained. An understanding of issues affecting older people would be helpful.

You will work in various Supported Housing properties, across the City, so use of own car would be an advantage. You will assist in providing cleaning in the communal areas and the immediate external surrounding vicinity of our Supported Housing Complexes. You will provide cover to the current cleaning team, to backfill absence and leave or may be part of joint working on larger tasks, when required.

You will also be responsible for ensuring all equipment used in your role meet required health and safety standards and assist in the ordering of appropriate stock. You will be responsible for the general Health & Safety in and around our blocks. An understanding of safeguarding adults and working in a specialist service area with vulnerable adults would be preferable.

No formal qualifications are necessary as relevant training will be given. A willingness to work and participate in ongoing relevant training is essential and possibly assist with some social activities if required. The position is predominately a lone working post, working in one of our 26 complexes across the City, as well as joint working with other cleaners at various locations City wide, when required.

A driving licence is preferable but not essential as you will need to work at various locations City Wide. The post is subject to a Basic DBS check. Basic IT skills are required.

You will be working towards the Level 2 Cleaning Hygiene Operative apprenticeship with GLP Training. The duration of this apprenticeship is 12 months with 3 months for the End Point Assessment.

  • Please note the salary quoted is based on full time hours (30 hours per week). Hourly rate is £12.
  • The working hours for this role are 30 hours per week.
  • This post is fixed term apprenticeship for 15 months.
  • Please note that appointments are usually made at the bottom of the salary scale.
  • This post requires a DBS check.
