The Bank exists to ensure monetary stability and to contribute to financial stability. Property ensure that the infrastructures required to support the Bank’s critical functions are maintained and enhanced.

Department Overview
You will be working within a team covering a wide range of disciplines, electricians, mechanics, lift technicians, locksmiths and carpenters. Our workshops are based within Head Office and Debden. You will work within a small designated team and will report directly to the respective Building Manager. We have a diverse range of both electrical and mechanical plant on our site which we have to maintain, repair and sometimes replace. Our electrical systems include a large Low Voltage & High Voltage network, electrical substations, uninterrupted power supply systems, Building Management System, generators, alternators, computerised lighting system, passenger lifts, motors, batteries, portable appliance testing etc. Our mechanical system includes gas boilers, chillers, fan coil units, cooling towers, fans, fabrication work, commercial plumbing work, water treatment, damper controls, heat exchangers, humidifiers, pumps etc.

Job description
We are looking to recruit an apprentice to work within our Property Maintenance teams based in Debden and Threadneedle Street. Apprentices will follow an advanced duel-skilled engineering apprenticeship scheme specialising in Building Services engineering. This will involve going to college one day a week learning electrical systems and one day a week learning mechanical systems.

The apprentices will work as part of a team to:

  • Fault find, maintain, improve and repair mechanical and/or electrical plant
  • Maintain continuity of work and information between colleagues
  • Keep drawings and Operations & Maintenance documentation up-to-date
  • Build a safe working environment by adhering to the Bank's and statutory Health and Safety requirements and codes of practices
  • Undertake training to meet the Bank's requirements

During your apprenticeship there will be an opportunity to work alongside trained personnel covering the majority of the plant listed above. How 'hands on' you get depends on your level of competency.

You will be managed by a Team Leader and mentored by a Senior Technician depending on what site you are working from. In addition the relevant teams (dependant on site) will make sure you have the support you need. Their job is to ensure that your training fits your personal requirements, offers the skills needed for the job and satisfies national standards. They will also be there to help you through any difficult times.
Standard working day is 08:00 - 16:00, this depends on site but it will be a 35 hour week and will include 2 days attending college each week.

Please note that the training provider is based in Dagenham and that you will attend the providers site 2 days a week. Therefore for years 1 & 3 of your apprenticeship you will be based in Debden for 3 days per week and Dagenham for the remaining 2 days of that week. Likewise in years 2 & 4 you will be based in Threadneedle Street for 3 days per week with the remaining days in Dagenham.’


Role Requirements
Minimum Essential Criteria

  • Minimum 5 GCSE's at grade 4 or above (old grade C), to include English, Mathematics and one Science or predicted grades.
  • You will need to show that you are committed, and aware of your responsibilities to both yourself and the company who would employ you.
  • You will also need to be happy to work as both part of a team and individually, and be able to use your own initiative.
  • Must be able to work closely with a mentor and assist in daily activities.
  • Apprenticeships can be demanding but they are very rewarding.


Recruitment Process


1. Due to the Banks anonymised recruitment process, the Recruiting manager cannot see your CV.

2. When you initially apply you will be asked a number of questions, these questions are internally called sifting questions. You are expected to fill these in. The more information you put in the better chance you have of going to the next stage.

3. Assessment, we invite selected candidates from the first phase (application questions) to Debden for an AM or PM assessment. This consists of an hour long multiple choice mathematics paper, a walk around the facility and finally a one to one interview with a panel to discuss your CV and about yourself. The whole assessment will last between 2-3 hours.

4. Second interview, from the assessment if you are successful you will be invited back for a second interview to give a 10 minute presentation on Building Services and a more in-depth interview.

This specific role offers a base salary of £22,500 per annum.

  • A non-contributory, career average pension giving you a guaranteed retirement benefit of 1/95th of your annual salary for every year worked.
