About the Apprenticeship Programme
AstraZeneca’s Automation Engineer Apprenticeship programme is designed to create the control and Automation Engineers of the future. Engineering apprentices play a hugely important role at AstraZeneca, solving challenges that arise from some of the most advanced equipment in the industry. The Automation Engineers primarily assist the smooth running of manufacturing in activities such as site maintenance and improvements. They will work closely with other production roles in a fast-paced and cost-conscious manufacturing environment, where complex problem solving is key.
Under supervision the apprentice will develop a solid grasp of the core Automation Engineering skills. The skills developed are:
- Helping maintain statutory regulations and keep us all safe
- Using and interpreting a range of engineering data sources and supporting documentation
- Maintaining electrical, electronic and process control equipment
- Understanding code, to allow investigation and interrogation of software applications
- Carrying out fault diagnosis and repair on high technology engineered systems
- Understanding data, and exposing data from manufacturing systems to IT systems
- Understanding key performance indicators and utilising lean techniques to improve efficiency and effectiveness
- Identifying improvements; then planning, implementing and testing software changes

- Ensuring manufacturing systems are cyber-secure
- Leveraging Smart Factory benefits – e.g. providing data insights and AI
