We are looking for an experienced and motivated Band 6 Breast Care Staff Nurse to join our Team at HJE. The Breast Unit aims to offer high level of patient care to all who access the service. The consultants aim to offer a one stop service to patients who require a breast service consultation by offering a consultation and radiology investigations during their appointment.
The post holder will provide information, education and support for patients, their partners and families who are undergoing investigation and treatment for benign or malignant breast disease, including symptom management and control. The post holder will provide clinical leadership to the Breast Unit and ensure the provision of high quality nursing care to all who access services, will act as a role model and expert clinical practitioner and will assist in the safe, effective and efficient management of the department within allocated resources.

What are the main responsibilities of the Breast Care Staff Nurse Role?
To be a clinical expert within the Breast Unit Department
Assess new patients, identifying their physical, psychological, emotional, spiritual and cultural needs in relation to their disease and proposed treatment, providing a pathway of nursing care for the patient
Provide emotional support to patients and their families by displaying a caring and empathetic attitude at all times
Develop good working relationships with relevant staff in all settings
Act as a patients advocate when relevant and be able to educate on all treatment options to enable a patient to make an informed choice, negotiating with the medical team to agree a pathway of care
To ensure patients and their families are given appropriate oral and written information regarding planned care and the disease process
To formulate individualised patient treatment care programs in conjunction with the medical team ensuring investigations and treatments are organised as needed, and each patient is placed in the correct treatment protocol
Review patients independently and initiate changes in management of care, as needed.
Network and develop liaison role with other specialist care providers as required
To develop and maintain clinical skills and knowledge necessary to provide holistic, evidence based nursing care. This includes completion of training and development identified as part of appraisal and personal development (PDP) planning
To be competent in the undertaking of relevant outpatient procedures such as dressing changes, removal of drains
Assist in the development and review of policies and standards for the safe use of equipment and any new equipment introduced to the department
Support the provision of effective communication between all members of the multidisciplinary team, other hospital departments, relatives and visitors
To initiate and participate in audit relating to nursing and multidisciplinary care
Promote breast awareness for staff, patients and families
Am I the right person for this Breast Care Staff Nurse role?
Current NMC registration in adult or general nursing
Educated to first degree level or equivalent
Breast Care qualification is desirable
Significant post registration skills
Minimum of 3 years post-registration in nursing field
Minimum of 6 months working within Breast unit or ward
Excellent communicator
Professional commitment and self-awareness
Motivate self and others
Good organisational and time management skills
Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team
Sound knowledge of current issues in nursing, developments
Demonstrable knowledge and skills in a variety of clinical specialities within an outpatient’s setting is desirable
