  • Engage and empower: We talk and listen to others, working together as one.

About the team we are recruiting to

Join our energetic and collaborative Building Control team, where your ideas will shine, and your voice will be heard. Make an impact alongside a group of passionate professionals who thrive on teamwork and celebrate success together.

Coventry is a great place to hone your professional skills. We deal with a huge range of Building Control projects, from domestic extensions to large-scale commercial and public developments. Uniquely, Coventry is the home to two designated sports grounds which means we get involved in ensuring the safety of tens of thousands of sports fans and concert goers.

We pride ourselves on providing a high-quality, customer-focused, and cost-effective service that ensures the safety and quality of buildings in our area. We work collaboratively with a range of other departments and agencies to promote our key strategic objectives such as sustainable development, energy efficiency, accessibility, and fire safety.

We value diverse perspectives and experiences and are striving to create a workplace culture that is inclusive, is accepting of all and is free from discrimination and bias.

What is the job role?

As our Building Control Team Leader, you will work closely with the Building Control Manager to oversee the delivery of the Building Control service, lead innovation and ensure the quality and performance of the team. You will have the opportunity to shine and make a significant contribution to Coventry’s growth and success.

You will represent the service at a senior management level, provide expert advice and help shape the future and strategic direction of the team whilst also getting involved in complex and high-profile projects.

Who are we looking for?

Up for the challenge and the opportunity to impress and progress your career? If so, then come and join us if you are ready to take on new challenges and elevate our team with your unique expertise and dedication!

We're seeking a forward-thinking leader who values diversity as a core strength, creating an environment where every voice is heard and respected.

You will need to have your competence validated by the Building Safety Regulator (BSR) through Building Safety Competence Foundation (BSCF), the Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE) or Total Training and be qualified to work on any Class 2 building.

You must have substantial experience working in Building Control, including dealing with complex and high-risk projects. Experience in managing, supervising, and mentoring staff is desirable.

You will need to have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work under pressure and prioritise your workload. You will also need to have a valid driving licence as you will be required to travel to various sites across the city.

When applying, you will need to upload evidence that you hold the relevant professional qualification to undertake the role.

Due to the specialist nature of this role, we will aim to process applications within 48 hours of receipt.

Successful candidates will be invited to attend a two-stage selection process, involving firstly, a telephone interview with Kate Rich, Building Control Manager, to gauge experience. Following this, successful candidates will be invited to a formal panel interview on 4th June 2024.

If you would like to have an informal discussion about the position, please speak to Kate Rich, Building Control Manager on 02476 978538 or email Kate.Rich@coventry.gov.uk

In return we can offer you:

  • Flexibility. Although this post is being advertised as a full-time role, we are a flexible employer and will consider applications from candidates who would prefer to work part-time or more flexibly.
  • A market supplement of £5, 000 per year.
  • The use of a pool car.

We believe that diversity drives innovation and success, which is why we are committed to ensuring our management team represents a wide range of backgrounds and experiences.

Within our team people from minority ethnic backgrounds are currently under-represented, as a result, we would like to encourage people from minority ethnic backgrounds to apply for this post.  This does not prevent any other applicants with or without a protected characteristic as set out within the Equality Act 2010 from applying.

If you need help or support to complete your application, please visit our accessibility page to see how we can assist you.

For full details on the application process please read the attached document labelled 'Coventry City Council Application Process'

Interview date: 4th June 2024
