Business & News Journalist
Location: Belfast
Duration: 12 month contract
Role Purpose
As a Business and News Journalist for the Belfast Telegraph and Belfasttelegraph.co.uk you will source and break exclusive stories and in-depth analysis in print and online.
The role holder will write high-quality unique stories, especially on business, personal finance and economic issues, and be able to provide in-depth analysis and innovative online content within the multi-media newsroom. They will have a wide network of contacts that they will continue to develop.
Role Responsibilities (Overview)
- Consistently break business and news stories and write informative analysis
- Create and write up-to-date, accurate, balanced and engaging multimedia business content
- Develop the digital business offering across all platforms and story types
- Deputise for the business editor as required
- Represent the organisation externally
- Work collaboratively with the Business Editor, News Editor and wider editorial teams
- Ensure a high level of fast, accurate, fair and engaging journalism
- Ensure that our output reflects the audiences that we serve – and helps to grow subscriptions online and support print circulation
- Planning and advising business and news desks of relevant upcoming events and potential angles on stories
- Delivering content to tight deadlines
- Carry out your duties at all times in accordance with the Mediahuis Editorial Code of Practice and relevant professional and legal codes.
Experience & Qualifications (Minimum Experience & Essential Knowledge)
- At least two years’ experience as a reporter – preferably with experience of breaking business stories.
- Good knowledge of UK, Irish, European and world business issues.
- Excellent news judgment coupled with the ability to write engaging content and develop in-depth analysis
- Ability to maximise social media and other digital tools to source news information and promote journalism
- Ability to explain complex issues in an accessible manner
- The flexibility and adaptability to sustain performance, particularly under pressure to meet deadlines and changing priorities and circumstances.
- Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop preferred
- Comfortable with social media
- Good knowledge of rights and licensing issues
- Demonstrating consistency when putting together coherent and cohesive headlines, sub-heads, standfirsts, and captions
- Working in a collaborative and multidisciplinary way under exacting deadlines
