Channels and Content Communications Lead

The starting salary is £57,301, which includes allowances totalling £2,841.

The salary is broken down as £54,460 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £66,356. Plus, a location allowance of £1,841 and a non-pensionable allowance of £1,000.

Location: Westminster

We’re after a brilliant senior digital communicator to lead our Channels team to manage and develop our internal and external digital channels to ensure we are reaching and engaging with our target audiences.

You will lead the delivery and implementation of a digital strategy, transforming the way the Met reaches and engages with its internal and external audiences. You will also manage proactive and reactive communications of high-profile and often controversial issues across internal and external digital channels. 

The Channels and Content Team is new and is structured with two portfolios – one focused on Channels and the other on content production. This role will take the lead for the Channel portfolio and we are particularly keen to ensure that the role holder has strong internal channel expertise. The role holder will also support our external Channels and work closely with the Content lead and there is an expectation that both leads will flex across portfolios as needed to provide resilience and have the skills to be able to do so.

The key responsibilities for this role are:

  • Oversee and co-ordinate the management and development of multiple internal and external digital channels to help us improve how we reach and engage with our diverse audiences and meet their needs, including help maintain channel safety and standards.
  • Understand the New Met for London plan and the Commissioner’s priorities and use this to work with the Head of Content and Channels to support oversight, management and delivery across the Met’s internal and external digital and social channels.
  • Responsible for audience engagement – driving positive engagement, managing inappropriate comments to ensure our audiences are a safe space for contributors, and ensuring response and rebuttal as needed on corporate posts.
  • Lead the development of audience insight and targeting to improve reach and engagement (including of less engaged audiences).
  • Oversee the delivery of a quality service and project manage multiple projects to ensure delivery to deadlines and against objectives.
  • Help build proficiency of colleagues from other teams across all Channels and audiences. 
  • Plan strategically and use insight and data to support your plans, including driving a performance culture with a positive, proactive approach to evaluation and strong statistical analysis skills.
  • Interpret, present and make sound recommendations and decisions – converting digital analytics into insights to shape future plans and contribute to departmental and Met-wide performance reporting.
  • Every member of our team is expected to be multi-skilled and work across several communication disciplines using modern up-to-date professional practice.
  • Interpret briefs and liaise with colleagues across the Directorate, drawing on extensive knowledge and experience to advise on the most appropriate channel choice, always striving to achieve a successful and effective outcome.
  • Use sound political judgment and news sense to develop a swift understanding of the Met’s internal culture and use of the intranet and social channels.
  • Oversee the establishment of effective networks of influencer and community voices and have an understanding of campaigns, marketing and stakeholder management.

  • Oversee and quality assure the output of your teams across the breadth of work, from planning and delivery through to evaluation, to maximise the positive impact of planned content and deal reactively with breaking news stories at short notice and under pressure.

  • Provide overall support and direction to your team, with particular attention to managing and developing their skills.

Additional Information

You may be expected to work at other Met buildings across London from time to time.

You will be part of working a weekend rota (approximately one weekend in five) with premium pay for weekends and time off in lieu and may be required to provide other out of hours cover with appropriate notice. You will also be part of an on-call rota.
