Things you need to know

Selection process details

This vacancy is using Success Profiles (opens in a new window), and will assess your Behaviours, Strengths and Experience.

Application

As part of the application process you will be asked to complete a personal statement (500 words max) outlining how you meet the Essential Criteria listed above.

  • Excellent communication skills
(The ability to communicate effectively via spoken or written communication)
  • Exceptional customer service skills
(The ability to resolve customer queries, in what can sometimes be a sensitive or challenging environment)
  • Effective decision making skills
(The ability to gather and understand complex information to make decisions)

Further details around what this will entail are listed on the application form.

You can use an example or examples from either work, volunteering, your personal life or your academic life to complete your personal statement. We would recommend using only 1, or at a maximum 2 examples here, to stay within the 500 word count limit.

When entering information on your personal statement relating to your employment history please ensure you remove any personal details that could be used to identify you. This relates to name and contact details which might usually appear on your Personal statement.

Failure to do so will result in your application being withdrawn.

Depending on application numbers, we may progress all candidates who have applied directly to interview without assessing the written application evidence.

Stage 2: Interview

At stage 2 you will be invited to an interview via Microsoft teams. All elements of the interview will be via video link, and the whole process should take approximately 30-40 minutes. This will be a blended interview consisting of 2 types of questions, behaviour questions and strength questions.

To help you prepare and settle into the interview you will be sent the behaviour questions in advance of the interview. These questions should be treated as confidential and should not be shared. The interview panel may ask you other questions which will not be shared in advance, including follow-up questions, and those about your abilities and strengths.
Behaviour Questions

The behaviours being assessed at interview are:

  • Communicating and Influencing
  • Managing a Quality Service
  • Making Effective Decisions
  • Delivering at Pace

The Civil Service Behaviours document should be able to help you prepare for the behaviour questions that you will be asked at interview. This document is designed to give you an overview of what is expected of individuals at each level. Before you attend your interview, think about examples that you can give of times when you have demonstrated the behaviours outlined above. This might be at work or somewhere else such as work experience, volunteering, your academic life or in connection with a hobby or your home life. When answering the questions, you could consider using the WHO method of answering questions to best structure your answer. This stands for What you did, How you did it and what the Outcome was.

Strengths Questions

We don’t advertise which strengths that we will be assessing at interview, but the Civil Service Strengths Dictionary should be able to help you prepare for these types of questions. Strength questions are designed to explore what interests you and what you enjoy doing. These questions will help the interview panel assess your strengths and preferred style of working. Your answers to this type of question will be shorter than that of a behaviour-based question and you will not be expected to use the WHO method’. The linked Civil Service Strengths Dictionary will give you an idea of the strengths we look for in the Civil Service, although you will never be expected to demonstrate all of these for one job role. Before the interview it would be helpful to reflect on what you feel are your personal strengths and preferred ways of working.

You can take notes into the interview to remind you of possible examples if you think this would help you, but to have the best interview experience possible, we do not recommend that you simply read from a script.

Approximate campaign timeline:

Interviews: 22 April - 03 May 2024 (subject to change)

Sift and interview dates to be confirmed.

Sometimes we may choose to invite all candidates straight to interview without assessing the written application evidence. Therefore, the interview timeline may change depending on the approach we decide to take.

If a provisional offer of employment is made, the pre-employment checking process can take up to 8 weeks for external candidates (see candidate pack for types of documentation required). Candidates may be made a conditional offer, this means you could take up post before certain checks have been completed, however, if subsequent checks fail, employment may be terminated.

The Civil Service values honesty and integrity and expects all candidates to abide by these principles. Please ensure that all examples provided in your application are taken directly from your own experience and that you describe the examples in your own words. Applications will be screened and if evidence of plagiarism or copying examples/answers from other sources is found, your application will be withdrawn. Internal DWP candidates may also face disciplinary action.

To support this aim you may be required to undertake a work based qualification, which may be in the form of an apprenticeship, which will support you in further developing your professional knowledge and skills for this role and your future career development. The qualification can be undertaken in work time, you agree to take this job on the basis that you may be required to undertake a work based qualification; a candidate’s failure to participate fully in the professional programme, once appointed, may be a breach of their employment contract.

Important

If you hold a level 3 qualification (2 A levels or equivalent) then please bring your certificates with you to the interview if you have them.

Complete the “Reasonable Adjustments” section in the “Additional requirements” page of your application form to tell us what changes or help you might need further on in the recruitment process. For instance, you may need wheelchair access at interview, or if you’re deaf, a Language Service Professional.
