Job summary
In Central Region, we manage and care for public land and forests in and around the cities and towns of the Central Belt, within the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, and right across the peninsulas and intricate coasts of Cowal. We not only manage forests and produce timber, we also support a wide range of recreation facilities, tackle managing woodland across steep ground and in sensitive landscapes, establish woodland on former coalfield sites, and have an ambitious programme to restore Atlantic rainforest.
Our Civil Engineering team plans, designs and manages the construction and maintenance of our roads and associated infrastructure, including bridges and quarries. These are essential to support the harvesting of timber, our restocking plans, conversion to native woodland and our deer management. In addition, many roads are used for informal recreation purposes.
In FLS, we get to work outdoors, we’re knowledgeable about modern forestry and wider land management, and we’re committed to managing land to adapt to climate change, secure carbon, improve biodiversity and create great places for the people of Scotland.
Job description
Your primary role is to plan and design construction works, preparing site plans, risk assessments and contract paperwork; and manage the delivery of projects, including cost control, on behalf of FLS.
Our engineering projects include the design and layout of forest roads, forest road upgrades and maintenance, bridges, car parks and forest trails; and the design and implementation of quarries.
Our work can be challenging – tackling steep slopes, peatland restoration areas and highly designated areas – and require lateral thinking to resolve design problems. You will work closely with foresters and environment advisers, landscape architects and national technical specialists, including the national engineering team, to identify solutions.
The projects are delivered by external contract secured through Scottish Government procurement. The site works are delivered using NEC3 and NEC4 Term Service Short Contracts and Engineering and Construction Short Contracts.

- Ability to work outdoors in all seasons in rural areas.
Desirable:
- Experience of working with construction projects for forestry operations;

- Knowledge of the Town and Country Planning system and how it applies to construction projects;
