Job summary
We are seeking a highly motivated Clinical Research Fellow to work on a project at Imperial College, in the Section of Paediatric Infectious Disease. The primary role will be to provide Clinical Research support for the work on novel diagnostics for inflammatory and Infectious Diseases. The successful candidate will join the Paediatric Infectious Diseases Research Group, working with Dr Jethro Herberg, Prof Aubrey Cunnington and Prof Michael Levin to work on the EU Horizon 2020-funded DIAMONDS project. We are looking for a highly motivated clinical trainee interested in a career in Paediatric Infectious Disease. As part of their work, we would support the appointee to develop the necessary skills, knowledge and pilot data for submission of their own PhD fellowship applications.
Duties and responsibilities
As a Clinical Research Fellow, you will work closely with the clinical team, and with the engineering and industry teams who are developing pilot diagnostic devices, and with the bioinformatics team who are developing diagnostic signatures. The post holder will be expected to assist with day-to-day running of the DIAMONDS study, including:
• Clinical phenotyping of children recruited to the study, working with the Research Nurse team, to help identify suitable patients, to interpret their clinical findings, and to take part in regular notes-based patient reviews of recruited patients.
• Running quality control checks of clinical data
• Responding to queries from UK partner sites
• Analysis of clinical data generated in the project and by the post-holder
• Application of their clinical knowledge and experience with handling complex databases to support the clinical interpretation of results generated by members of the wider research team who are generating data from clinical samples
• Assist in the running of the DIAMONDS Pilot Demonstration – an observational research study of febrile children in which we are measuring gene expression signatures on a new generation of diagnostic platforms
As part of their work, the post holder will be expected to develop their own research interests, and undertake high-quality, focussed research, leading to publications in peer reviewed journals, and supporting applications for further funding to follow-up the work.
Essential requirements
The postholder must be a clinician with an interest in Paediatrics and Infectious Disease, and must be registered at the General Medical Council. Additional duties and responsibilities, and essential and desired requirements for the postholder are included on the Job Description.
Further information
The post holder will hold an honorary clinical contract with Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, enabling them to take on clinical responsibilities appropriate to their level of experience and expertise.
This is a full-time position, fixed term for 1 year in the first instance based at South Kensington and St. Mary’s Campus.

Hybrid working may be considered for this role. Staff working in roles that are suitable for hybrid working will normally be expected to work 60% of their time onsite. The opportunity for hybrid working will be discussed at interview.
