Communications and Engagement Lead (HDRC)

Do you want an amazing opportunity for your next job? We are hiring a full-time Communications and Engagement Lead. This is a senior position in our Health Determinants Research Collaboration (HDRC) delivery team. The role is important for both building and sharing the impact of this groundbreaking programme. The HDRC aims to reduce health inequalities in London's most crowded and fastest growing borough.

Can you engage and inspire people from different backgrounds and walks of life? You will share our passion for working together across sectors. We need someone who can bring people into our research programme. They should also help us create and maintain a culture of partnership and collaboration. You will be able to break down barriers between the council, universities, community organisations and local residents.

You will lead on sharing research findings to ensure our work has impact locally, regionally and nationally. We need someone who can develop communication plans and strategies. Additionally, you'll create interesting content and manage social media channels. You will also be responsible for digital communications for the HDRC programme.

This is a great opportunity to work across local government, higher education, and the voluntary sector in the East End. It’s vital that this work reflects and engages our diverse community. We encourage applicants from right across our community.

About our HDRC

The HDRC is a 5-year national programme funded by the Department of Health and Social Care through the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). Tower Hamlets was one of the first councils to receive this funding. The main goal of HDRCs is to promote an evidence-based approach in local government. More information about HDRCs is on the NIHR website. Health Determinants Research Collaborations | NIHR

Our HDRC is a powerful collaboration between the council, local universities, and community organisations. Our ambition is to make Tower Hamlets a go-to place for systematic, high-quality research into health inequalities.

Over the 5-year funding period, we will:

  • make it easier to do collaborative research,
  • develop the right data, processes, and resources to support research,
  • train employees and residents to do research,
  • apply this research to inform policies and improve services,
  • make positive changes for residents.

If you share our ambition, and you’d like work with us to achieve this, we’d love to hear from you. If you want an informal conversation about the role please contact Sarah Vallelly, Corporate Research Lead – sarah.vallelly@towerhamlets.gov.uk

About Tower Hamlets

Tower Hamlets is one of London’s most diverse, vibrant boroughs. It’s a melting pot of creativity, enterprise and cultural life that brings the best of London together in just eight square miles. It’s also a borough of contrasts, and as a Council, we know that Tower Hamlets is on a vital journey of improvement. There are tough challenges we need to tackle, but with that comes a unique opportunity to make a real impact. We’re changing – rapidly. This is a place where people make things happen. Where everyone works together with zeal, passion and pride.

Tower Hamlets vision for our borough is that: people are aspirational, independent and have equal access to opportunities; we are a borough that our residents are proud of and love to live in; and we are a dynamic, outcomes-based council using digital innovation and partnership working to respond to the changing needs of our borough. We want people who aspire to our TOWER values: Together; Open; Willing; Excellent; Respect.

Tower Hamlets has a zero-tolerance approach to, and works to eradicate, all forms of discrimination on the basis of race, sex, disability, age, religion or belief, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, marital status, status as a civil partner, gender, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy and maternity and looks to employ a diverse workforce representative of those groups. We recognise that people can also be disadvantaged by their social and economic circumstances, so we will work to eliminate discrimination and disadvantage caused by social class.

We welcome applicants interested in flexible working arrangements and also applicants who live in the borough. The role will be based at the new Town Hall in Whitechapel. The council offers flexible working arrangements including a mixture of in person and hybrid working.
