Job description

About the role

Do you want to work in a place where you can promote reading for pleasure; or help out at Legoclub and Code Club; and even sing at Rhymetime for toddlers? Can you deliver excellent customer service and help people struggling in the digital world? Our ideal candidate is a reading enthusiast who is more likely to organise a STEM event and tweet about it than say ‘Shhh’. Libraries are about books and so much more. We’re offering this brilliant opportunity for you to join us as we continue to innovate. From day one you’ll be working in a customer centred environment, in a busy community hub that serves a diverse range of people, partners and organisations.

This position is for Weston library, but you may be asked to work in any other North Somerset library.

This is a part time, permanent role with a set rota. The hours to be worked are as follows:

Week 1 – Monday 10.00am – 05.00pm, Tuesday 10.00am – 06.00pm, Friday - 10.00am – 05.00pm, Saturday - 09.00am – 04.00pm.

Week 2 - Tuesday 10.00am – 05.00pm, Wednesday 10.00am – 05.00pm, Thursday 10.00am – 05.00pm, Friday 10.00am – 06.00pm.

About you

We are looking for dynamic, well-motivated people to provide a welcoming environment to our customers. You will be hard-working and receptive to change, with a wide general knowledge, an interest in books, and a digital curiosity. You will work in a team, dealing with enquiries and requests, planning and delivering interactive activities, and promoting our services. You will be encouraging the love of reading through a range of promotional activities which will include delivering a weekly Rhymetime or Storytime event to children age 0-5 and their parents / carers; this will involve singing nursery rhymes and songs with enthusiasm. Confidence in the use of digital technology is essential as you will be helping customers to use our equipment and their own.

Why North Somerset?

We are proud to offer an environment that is supportive and rewarding, working as part of a team who are passionate about the work they do. We offer great training and development opportunities, with supportive management. We offer an excellent benefits package to all our employees including:

  • A Local Government Pension Scheme.
  • A Flexible Benefits Scheme via salary sacrifice to obtain a cycle for work, childcare vouchers, and a range of benefits and discounts including staff discounts in gyms.
  • Generous annual leave.
  • Employee Assistance and support offering a variety of employee wellbeing services to support a healthy work/life balance and lifestyle.
  • Optional pension enhancement through our Additional Voluntary Contribution scheme.

Want to know more and apply?

For an informal discussion, please contact Kathrine Smart, Community Services Supervisor, on 01934 426252.

Anticipated interview dates: Monday 15th April & Wednesday 17th April 2024
