Position statement
Reporting to your line manager, you will be expected to: demonstrate a growing understanding and appreciation of the legislative and technical environment relevant to your area of career interest, together with a willingness to learn from those across your team; to act on directions, seeking clarifications when required; and to gain both knowledge and experience at every opportunity.
Commensurate with your experience to date, you will provide a variety of support services to senior professionals within the team and the wider company, in terms of research, site visits, appraisals, report writing and advice letters. Where appropriate individual tasks and smaller scale projects may be delegated to you, and the expectation is that you will be capable of undertaking that work with the appropriate level of care and attention, compliant with RPS procedures, following the relevant instructions and/or with support from your line manager and colleagues.
There will be an expectation to demonstrate good communication with team members, be self-motivated, exhibit a proactive approach and work well within a team environment, including providing support to colleagues.
Key responsibilities/accountabilities
Assist senior colleagues in managing the projects that the business undertakes including: assisting with coordinating project finances, assisting in the production of deliverables in line with the client’s expectations and helping to ensure deliverables are submitted on time.
Conduct research and continue to develop a working knowledge of relevant legal Acts, legislation, regulations, policies and guidelines applicable to your role.
Communicate with peers relating to project work, including the ability to ask for help when needed, recognising that this is not a performance shortfall but an expectation.
Prepare inputs for client proposals through, for example, information gathering, assessment of relevant data and details and providing appropriate summaries.
Where appropriate assist in public consultations with preparatory materials, attend public events in support of a wider client proposal, attend and monitor committee and other hearings.
Assist senior colleagues with tender submissions.
In consultation with, and with the support of your line manager ensure you achieve targets as set and agreed by your line manager for each year. This will include targets based on measurements such as time and utilisation.
Begin to take more responsibility for relatively straightforward proposals/applications/projects under the guidance of your line manager and/or other Director, always recognising that asking for assistance is expected (be prepared to suggest the approach you would take when doing so).
With support, start to represent the company at external events as required including those related to professional membership and business development.
Continue to attend client level project meetings and design team meetings with encouragement to participate where appropriate
As and when required, work in partnership with the broader RPS Consulting segment and RPS Group to really drive our multi-disciplinary offering to clients.
Technical knowledge of current and imminent UK legislation in relation to environmental regulations, policy, guidance and procedures e.g. contaminated land, waste and key operational environmental regulations.
Knowledge of applying environmental liability and sustainability principles to a range of projects, preferably within an environmental consultancy e.g. ASTM ‘Phase 1’ standards.
Experience of environmental desktop research, assessment and technical reporting.
Basic understanding of corporate (M&A) transactions i.e. auditing operational issues such as permitting, compliance, best practice and legislative requirements across a range of sectors (retail, industrial, commercial).
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Good communication (written and verbal) skills.

Willingness to learn and develop their understanding of both financial and project management techniques relevant to their role and career development.
Commitment to build knowledge of their chosen technical discipline including the current methods, legislation, techniques and guidance which directs the services we provide.

Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workload.
A positive approach to their own professional development.
Education and experience
Degree in relevant subject e.g. Earth Science / Environmental Science / Geology / Geography preferably with relevant Masters (MSc) or post graduate qualification
At least 2 years relevant professional experience
Subject to the role and business unit employed within, to be working towards Chartered membership of the relevant professional body in the chosen professional area (see section above relating to specific requirements for this role) e.g. IEMA.
