The Data Modeller is a member of one of the Agile development streams and is accountable for the creation and maintenance of conceptual, logical and physical data models for the Data and Analytics (D&A) develops being worked on within their stream. Reporting to the Lead Data Modeller as part of a virtual team, the role holder provides expert knowledge into the Agile Development Stream.
Key accountabilities;
- Responsible for creating models to the standards defined by the Lead Data Modeller in both process and documentation
- Creation and maintenance of data models within the model repository
- Creation of Physical and Logical data models in line with the Conceptual model and therefore in line with the Data and Analytics Strategy.
- Generating the Data Definition Language (DDL) used to create/amend the database schema for each environment it will be implemented into.
- The migration of legacy data models into the D&A target model, including importing existing data models from new sources to generate a data model.
- Responsible for the database standards in terms of naming conventions and schema design within models produced.
- Accountable that the physical models produced by the D&A data modellers are compliant with the conceptual model and support the needs of the business in regard to performance, data quality and simplicity.
- To produce data modelling artefacts as agreed in the D&A delivery framework to the required quality standards
- Accountable for facilitating data modelling sessions with senior level business owners to create the data model for new or enhanced data sets.
- Accountable for the creation of a project logical model during the requirements analysis phase, and ensuring any changes to the conceptual, logical or physical models as part of a project are captured and the relevant models updated.
Knowledge;
- Detailed working knowledge of Business Intelligence, Data warehousing, Data modelling and dealing with big data
- Knowledge of star schema structure & design, understanding of Kimball & Inmon data warehouse design
- Understanding of Agile development approach
- Sound knowledge of principles and practical steps to implement master data management
- A degree in a relevant technology/computer science subject or equivalent technical qualification
- Knowledge of relevant national and international legislation pertaining to the Government/Public Sector IT – e.g. Data Protection Act, EU Procurement Directives and Freedom of Information Act, including knowledge of basic confidentiality and data protection requirements that apply to the processing of customer information.
- Knowledge of London’s public transport system
Skills;
- Excellent attention to detail, to ensure accuracy in data mapping documentation.
- The ability to assimilate new information quickly and accurately.
- Proficient at use of standard computer packages
- Proven ability to build strong working relationships with colleagues and external stakeholders.
- Communicates all needs, instructions and decisions clearly. Adapts the style of communication to meet the needs of the audience. Checks for understanding
Experience;
- Experience of operating in a dynamic working environment, handling multiple tasks and deadlines, delivering to time, budget, and quality
- Experience of developing, publishing and maintain mapping documentation
- Experience of working on data warehouse development projects, preferably using iterative software techniques such as Agile.
- Experience working with a data modelling tool such as Erwin.
- Experience with writing SQL and running queries on multiple database technologies in support of data analysis.
