Data Engineer

Description

We are seeking a Data Engineer to join a forward-thinking team within a public sector organisation, focused on transitioning from traditional on-premise databases to advanced cloud-native solutions. This role requires a professional with expertise in AWS development, capable of contributing to the development of shared CDK constructs used across various teams for new and migrated databases. The emphasis is on creating standardised and high-quality database architectures, ensuring centralised assurance.

This role is being offered as an initial 6-month contract with the possibility of being extended further. The role is based in Edinburgh with hybrid working.

The Role:
As a Data Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in accelerating the migration of on-premise Postgres databases to AWS, ensuring the adoption of a code-driven approach for defining, deploying, and managing databases through pipelines. Your responsibilities will include crafting and enhancing CDK constructs, evaluating new cloud-based technologies, and improving the monitoring system for databases. Additionally, you will collaborate with the team on business-as-usual activities across different database technologies.

Requirements:
· Solid commercial experience in AWS technologies, including IAM, S3, EC2, and serverless computing (Lambda).
· Proficiency in Typescript (or modern JavaScript), CDK, Cloud Formation, SQL, RDS, and PostgreSQL.
· Familiarity with monitoring solutions such as CloudWatch, Grafana, and Kibana.

Responsibilities:
· Migrate on-premise Postgres databases to AWS, ensuring the code-driven deployment of new databases.
· Develop and enhance CDK constructs supporting database migration and management.
· Evaluate and implement new cloud-based database and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) technology.
· Improve the containerised Grafana monitoring system for centralised monitoring and alerting.
· Integrate the CommVault backup system with AWS RDS deployments.
· Participate in ongoing business-as-usual activities for various database technologies, including Postgres, MongoDB, Informix, and Oracle.

Package on Offer:
· Initial contract of 6 months with the option to extend further.
· Outside of IR35.
