DEPUTY HEAD OF DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITY - HUMANITIES

Major Gifts Fundraiser Experience Required

Oxford is the world's leading university for humanities teaching and research. The University’s scholarship in languages, literature, history, philosophy, religion & the arts – from the earliest civilisation to the present day – enriches our understanding of humankind, and informs how we engage with historic issues and contemporary concerns. You will be supporting this important work by fundraising for key academic posts, graduate scholarships and opportunities linked to the new Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities.

In 2025 the Humanities Division and its development office will move into the new Schwarzman Centre. The Centre will co-locate Humanities faculties alongside the Institute for Ethics in AI, the Oxford Internet Institute, a state-of-the-art library, and a suite of performance spaces - including a 500-seat concert hall and the Bate Collection of Musical Instruments.

An ambitious cutting-edge Cultural Programme, inspired by Oxford research, will host the world’s greatest artists and performers and empower the next generation of leaders in the Arts.

About the role:

  • This role reports to the Head of Development and line manages a team of three (Two Development Executives and a Development Officer).
  • The post holder will work with donors and academics at the highest level and will lead on a number of strategic priorities.
  • The successful candidate will be a motivated self-starter with a strong drive to develop purposeful and effective relationships with prospective benefactors.

To be successful in this role:

  • You will be enthusiastic about the impact of research and teaching in the Arts and Humanities.
  • You will be educated to degree level or equivalent and will be an experienced development professional with a demonstrable track record of securing six-figure major gifts.
  • You must have a confident approach to achieving ambitious income targets and the ability to think entrepreneurially.
  • You will contribute to approaches to high-level donors (corporate, trust and individual) and will manage your own donor portfolio.
  • You will possess diplomacy, creativity and outstanding communication skills, as well as the ability to operate comfortably in a large, complex institution with multiple stakeholders.
  • Essential to the role is the ability to develop good working relationships with the academic community, and the creativity, discretion and tenacity to manage multiple projects.
