Job description

Job introduction
Are you an experienced and effective manager? Do you have a passion for supporting local services and helping councils to optimise the use of their finite resources? Are you able to lead and co-ordinate complex cyclical financial processes?
If so, we would love to hear from you for our Head of Corporate Finance and Deputy CFO role.
Strategic financial advice and planning is of critical importance to the council and its members, so we are looking for someone who is an experienced Strategic Business Partner able to provide financial advice and analysis at the highest levels of the organisation.
You will be joining a diverse, friendly, and professional team. The finance service at Brighton & Hove City Council is performing well, is highly respected and has strong customer satisfaction results. It is operating in an environment of increasing financial complexity and increasing demands for higher level advice.
For an informal discussion, please contact Nigel Manvell, CFO, on 07717 315606.
Interview date: To be confirmed mid-July.
About the role
This high-profile role is key to helping the council navigate through the financial challenges it faces, including increasing demands for services within finite resources. The role has a strong corporate focus including leading the annual budget setting process for council services and overseeing multi-year financial planning.
You will be responsible for writing and presenting board/committee-level financial reports and briefings in an accessible manner for Councillors, Directors or other Senior Leaders.
To deliver this, you will have:

  • Substantial experience in delivering financial services within a large, complex organisation and the ability to work at scale.
  • An adaptable, transparent approach, and you will use your ability to influence and collaborate with diverse council colleagues and partners to help the council to achieve its priorities.
  • The ability to work in a political environment and form positive working relationships with Councillors, Directors, and other Senior Leaders.
  • Be skilled in strategic financial planning and reporting, analysing and interpreting financial data.
  • Lead a Corporate Finance team providing support to the council including co ordination and oversight of budget monitoring, treasury management, capital investment and financing, taxation and medium-term financial planning.

Why us?

  • You will have the opportunity to work in a diverse, high-performing finance service.
  • You will be able to work flexibly, including some working from home.
  • The team and service is supportive, friendly, and sociable.
  • In our last staff survey, staff rated the service positively as a fair and inclusive place to work where they are treated fairly as an individual.

Please read our Apply for a job at the council (brighton-hove.gov.uk) pages carefully. They give you all the guidance you need to complete your application as well as information on what will happen after you’ve submitted your application and at interview.
