Derbyshire Museums Manager
Buxton, full time (37 hours a week) fixed term for two years
£41,765-£45,149 – Plus market leading package (see below)
Buxton Museum and Art Gallery is an award-winning accredited museum service. The museum is currently closed due to major structural building problems, while plans are developed to safeguard the collections, provide an interim service, and deliver a long-term home for the museum.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced museum professional to take the lead in driving the museum service forward. This is an exciting opportunity to re-imagine and redevelop the museum service and its wonderful collection to meet the expectations and aspirations of residents and visitors to Buxton and the Peak District.
What you will be doing:
- Defining and developing the vision, strategy and policy for Buxton Museum
- Planning and overseeing the move of the collections to safe storage
- Planning and developing an interim service that continues to provide research access to the collections and engages with people in the community
- Developing a long-term plan for delivery of the museum service, potentially in new premises
- Leading a small team to deliver the current, interim and future needs of the service
- Ensuring Buxton Museum remains an Accredited Museum, driving continuous and consistent improvement and service development
- Building and sustaining relationships with partners in other County Council departments, external agencies and stakeholders to help deliver the museum’s aims and objectives
- Identifying internal and external funding opportunities, preparing and submitting applications for funding, and managing funded projects
What skills and experience you need:
- A degree in museum studies, archaeology, history of art, or another relevant subject
- A qualification in museum studies or equivalent knowledge and experience
- Extensive understanding and knowledge of museum services
- Experience of leading the development of museum services, including working with partners and funders to maximise the impact of the service
- Experience of leading, developing and motivating staff and volunteers
- Experience of successfully applying for external funding
- Experience of managing major public-facing projects, ideally including capital and collections elements
- Being well organised and able to meet deadlines
